BASIC PURPOSE
The intern will assist the Public Affairs Department in developing and implementing the City's external and internal communication efforts and supporting City initiatives, and/or events. The position will report to and work with the City's Communications Specialist, and will coordinate and manage weekly schedules and work plans with this supervising position. This position will be expected to attend various activities during day and evening hours.
This is a part-time position with approximately 20 hours per week for a 6-month period. Work hours are flexible and may vary, depending on project and event needs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
These duties include but are not limited to the following:
+ Assist the Communications Specialist with the development and management of the City's external and internal communication efforts and help provide public, government, and media relations to promote City wide issues, initiatives, and/or events.
+ Collaborate with a variety of internal staff and external contacts to help develop engaging content like scripts for videos, taglines, and stories for social media, etc.
+ Assist with the compilation and editing of the City's monthly LaceyLife newsletter.
+ Track social media and traditional media coverage.
+ Attend community meetings and events, as needed, such as City Council and City Council Committee meetings. Meetings and events may occur in the evenings and on weekends.
+ Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
AREA(S) OF STUDY:
+ Must be currently enrolled in a post-secondary educational program leading to an undergraduate or graduate degree. Area(s) of study must be in Communications, English, Journalism, Marketing, Public Relations, Political Science, or closely related field. May be enrolled in technical certificate programs in particular fields relevant to the City's business objectives. Generally, interns should be advanced enough in their educational programs to have begun taking courses in a field related to their work at the City.
+ Must be in good standing at their college or university, and retain that status until the end of the internship.
+ If employed by the City over the summer, students may work without being enrolled; however, they must be returning to school and pre-registered for the fall term.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS OR LIENSE(S):
+ Must pass a background investigation.
+ Must be able to provide own transportation to and from office, meetings, and related job sites.
+ Must have a high school diploma or G.E.D.
+ Verification of identity and the United States work authorization must be completed as required by the Immigration Reform and Control Act.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
+ Various social media platforms and marketing, including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, You Tube, Instagram, and other emerging platforms.
+ Microsoft applications, basic photo-editing software, and internet browsers.
+ Principles and practices of public relations, media relations, public speaking, community relations, government relations, economic development, public information, marketing, and advertising.
+ Project planning, organization, and coordination.
+ Modern office practices, procedures, technology, and equipment.
SKILLS IN:
+ Writing for print, web, and general news editing.
+ Basic research, analysis, and composition of stories, reports, research papers, and other documents to clearly communicate information to the intended audience.
+ Monitoring, posting, and responding, in a professional manner, to a variety of social media platforms.
+ Photo and graphic editing.
+ Creating social media content independently in final production format that is ready to post.
ABILITY TO:
+ Effectively communicate orally and in writing, and demonstrate positive interaction with individuals of diverse occupational and social-economic backgrounds.
+ Establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff.
+ Effectively work both independently and within a team environment. Contribute openly, listen, disagree with respect, understand and acknowledge the ideas of others, work toward consensus, solicit cooperation, and resolve conflict.
+ Maintain confidentiality.
+ Respond in a timely and effective manner to the common inquiries or complaints from personnel, outside agencies, or the general public.
+ Take pictures and video of various City-related events and activities, and organize a photo and video library.
+ Create multimedia materials and edit images and video as needed.
+ Demonstrate attention to detail, and strong organizational and prioritization skills.
+ Receive feedback about projects and ideas.
+ Represent the City of Lacey in a professional manner during all interactions.
+ Operate in a fluid, creative environment that requires self-motivation and innovation.
Intern positions are not eligible for health insurance, other insurances, holidays, vacation, and/or other paid leave benefits provided to regular full-time positions; however, they are covered by Workers' Compensation Insurance. The City will comply with RCW 49.46.210 and WAC's 296-128-600 through 296-128-700 in providing paid sick leave to all covered employees (non-exempt).
Social Security and Federal withholding taxes will be deducted from wages.
*Please note, Intern positions are not eligible for membership in the Department of Retirement Systems.
