Position Summary
As a Network Support Specialist, your role involves ensuring the smooth operation of the organization’s network infrastructure.
Job Responsibilities
Reporting to the Head of IT, the Network Support Specialist will be responsible for the following:
- Monitor Network Performance: Use tools and software to track network performance and detect issues such as bottlenecks or outages.
- Regular Maintenance: Perform routine checks and updates to ensure network hardware and software are functioning optimally.
- Diagnose Problems: Identify and troubleshoot network issues, including connectivity problems, performance degradation, and hardware malfunctions.
- Resolve Issues: Implement solutions to resolve network problems, including reconfiguring devices or applying patches and updates.
- Set Up Network Devices: Configure routers, switches, firewalls, and other networking hardware according to organizational requirements.
- Network Changes: Implement changes to the network configuration as needed, such as expanding capacity or integrating new technologies.
- Implement Security Measures: Apply and manage network security protocols, including firewalls, VPNs, and intrusion detection systems.
- Monitor Security Alerts: Keep an eye on security alerts and logs to detect and respond to potential threats.
- Document Changes: Maintain accurate records of network configurations, changes, and incidents.
- Generate Reports: Prepare and present reports on network performance, incidents, and resolutions for management and other stakeholders.
- Assist Users: Provide technical support to end-users experiencing network-related issues.
- Conduct Training: Offer guidance and training to users on network policies and best practices.
- Plan Upgrades: Assist in planning and executing network upgrades and expansions.
- New Implementations: Support the deployment of new network solutions, including hardware and software installations.
- Work with IT Teams: Collaborate with other IT professionals, such as system administrators, security experts, and help desk staff, to address and resolve network issues.
- Vendor Coordination: Liaise with network equipment vendors and service providers for support and procurement.
- Follow Policies: Ensure network operations adhere to organizational policies, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Best Practices: Implement best practices for network management and security to maintain a reliable and secure network environment.
Skills and Qualifications
- Understanding of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, and other networking protocols.
- Knowledge of LAN, WAN, SD-WAN and VPN technologies.
- Proficiency with routers, switches, firewalls, and access points.
- Experience with network cabling and physical hardware troubleshooting.
- Familiarity with various operating systems, including Windows Server Family OS.
- Experience with network configuration and management in these environments.
- Ability to configure and manage network devices and services.
- Experience with network monitoring tools and software.
- Skills in diagnosing and resolving network issues.
- Ability to use diagnostic tools such as ping, traceroute, and network analyzers.
- Knowledge of network security principles, including firewalls, VPNs, and encryption.
- Understanding of common network threats and mitigation strategies.
- Basic scripting skills in languages like Python, Bash, or PowerShell for automating tasks and processes.
- Ability to explain technical issues and solutions to non-technical users.
- Clear documentation and reporting skills.
- Strong focus on providing excellent support and maintaining customer satisfaction.
- Patience and empathy when dealing with users experiencing technical difficulties.
- Collaboration with other IT professionals, including system administrators, security experts, and support teams.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
- Relevant certifications such as CompTIA A , Network, or CCNA are preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work in both mining and plant environments, including exposure to dust, noise, and varying weather conditions.
- Capability to perform physical tasks, such as lifting, inspecting equipment, and navigating uneven terrain.
