JOB OVERVIEW
Xcel Engineering is seeking a Deskside Support IT Specialist II to join our team of talented and diverse individuals. In this role, you'll provide end user support on 10,000+ Windows/Macintosh/Linux computers and mobile devices throughout ORNL.
Our team supports the executive staff encountering tier two computing issues. You will participate in the analysis, design, maintenance, and documentation of intermediate level information technology services for Windows and Macintosh computers throughout the lab. Additionally, you'd lead IT technical programs impacting all staff including working across a broad variety of technology areas in an ITIL environment addressing incidents, problems, changes, and requests.
Responsibilities include resolving or addressing incidents or requests and serving as one of the main points of contacts for IT services. These services include supporting: Operating systems; mobile devices (specifically iOS); E-Mail; Backup systems; Active Directory; software product updates; vulnerability resolution; and various support of other software products used on desktop systems.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Respond to medium-scale technical issues without supervision, including, but not limited to, areas covering incident responses; networked computing systems; and computing instrument integration to scientific/research devices.
- Provide specialized services like the design of information technology computer needs for staff.
- Test and verify intermediate-level technology-based procedures and processes.
- Help plan, coordinate, manage, and maintain intermediate-sized projects under minimal direction or while serving as a project lead.
- Research new technologies and train on them as needed.
- Support all aspects of mobile device related issues.
- Additional assignments may also be given.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- US Citizen with eligibility to obtain a security clearance.
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, or a related field of study and two (2) to four (4) years of relevant experience is required. An overall combination of equivalent experience may be considered.
- Proven knowledge and experience supporting both Macintosh and Windows platforms in an enterprise environment.
- Experience providing white glove support for executive staff.

- In-depth knowledge of computing systems integration in a research environment.

- Ability to identify and resolve technical issues working independently or as part of a team.
- Communicate effectively with technical staff and end-users.
- Working independently.
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to constantly evolving needs.
- Experience resolving network issues.
- Experience with ITIL-based concepts.
- Ability to provide basic to intermediate support for Linux operating systems.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
- Inside office environment.
- Working on a computer for long periods of time.
- May involve long period of sitting at a desk.
- The work environment is fast-paced and sometimes involves extreme deadline pressures.
