Lab Assistant - Good Shepherd Health Care

DEFINITION OF POSITION:

The Lab Assistant is responsible to the Laboratory Manager and/or Laboratory Director. This position is a third shift position that will be assisting with basic laboratory testing under the direction of a Medical Technologist. They may perform and release results for waived testing procedure(s) in the Meditech LIS system as assigned by the Laboratory Technologist or Lab Manager. This position will also be required to perform semi-technical duties including loading samples on instruments, assisting with analyzer maintanence, and the recording of required inventory, and other nightly duties as determined by technologist.  Perform collection of a variety of specimen types from pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.  Performs laboratory duties including the use of the Lab Information System (LIS) to place and receive orders; retrieve patient test results and other information. In addition to these duties the Lab Assistant prepares requisitions, maintains a filing system, prints, and delivers reports, provides data collection support, process and distributes laboratory samples and provides phone communication functions.  Additional duties include but not limited to greeting laboratory patients, answers and processes phone calls, and carries out patient satisfaction program requirements. May be required to perform special tasks/duties as assigned by the Lab Manager and serving on hospital committees or task forces. May act as courrier when specimen testing at Good Shepherd is unavailable.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1.            Able to collect venous and capillary blood samples, NP swabs for Flu, Covid or throat/nares samples from pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.

2.            Must have good manual dexterity skills.

3.            Must be able to read, write, and communicate effectively.

4.            Demonstrates the ability to perform in clerical and interpersonal aspects of clinical lab services.

5.            Must be able to lift 50 lbs maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 lbs.

6.            Must be able to receive and follow instructions pertaining to laboratory test procedures. 

7.            Must be able to identify, match, and distinguish colors.

8.           Must be detail oriented to ensure specimens are collected from the correct patient and recorded on the correct date of service.

QUALIFICATIONS:

A. Education:        High School Diploma or GED

          Preferred:    Phlebotomy Certification

B. Experience:

          Required:     Minimum of 6 months of phlebotomy experience in a working laboratory.

C. Other:

          Required:

                         Current BLS Certification, or ability to obtain upon 30 days of hire. Must be well groomed and demonstrates                               appropriate conduct. Must be able to read and write accurately and neatly. Willingness to learn and use patient                           satisfaction and quality measures
