Lab Assistant - Stony Brook Pathologists, UFPC

Schedule: Full Time
Days/Hours: 8:30 AM - 5 PM
Pay: $18.78 - $23.47

Responsibilities:SUMMARY: The lab assistant will be required to ensure proper patient identification of surgical slides and folders. This position requires experience, knowledge and superior independent judgement as well as excellent communication and interpersonal skills. In order for the pathologist to make a diagnosis they must rely on the competence of the lab aide for the correct management of the patient tissue slides. The quality of the diagnosis is directly related to the quality of the laboratory pre-diagnostic process. The clerk will be familiar with the overall laboratory policies, procedures, and service. Participate and assist the lab manager with efficient and effective departmental operations, including department quality control and compliance adherence.
Job Duties & Essential Functions:
- Cases assemble surgical slides and distribute all prepared slides to pathologist.
- Follow all appropriate protocols for all LIS/HIS systems
- Daily filing of surgical blocks and slides. Obtain surgical specimens for review. Obtain surgical slides for tumor board and return to files for future use.
- Record all QA documentation and report any discrepancies to supervisor immediately.
- Responsible for tracking reagent and supply inventory required for laboratory. Track all received supplies in Inventory Log and assist with ordering.
- Follow all laboratory procedures and protocols with interpretation of such policies as necessary to ensure proper patient care and safe work practices which include using appropriate engineering and administrative controls and/or wearing the appropriate personal protective equipment.
- Will assemble and barcode all routine and special request slides for additional levels, recuts, special stains and immunohistochemistry verifying all to completion.
- Accession surgical requisitions into VitalAxis assuring patient identification using established surgical policies and pathology protocols. Accession surgical specimens in VitalAxis barcoded system, ensuring accurate patient identification is confirmed.
- Follow up with physician practices for any missing patient demographics or insurance.
- Assist Histology Technologists and Cytology Technologists with additional tasks.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications :
- Associates degree.
- In lieu of an Associate’s degree a minimum of one year hospital experience, clinical laboratory or healthcare experience.
- Excellent organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications :
- Proficient with Hospital Information System (HIS).
- Proficiency with Laboratory Information System (LIS).
- Knowledge of patient identification barcoding systems.
Physical Demands:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate with patients, staff and medical providers. The employee must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations. This position is active and requires the employee to constantly move about in the office to assist patients, staff and medical providers. Any additional physical demands will be outlined and provided by management.
