Grade: 5

Salary: $33,448 - $39,544

The Research Foundation for Mental Hygiene is seeking two qualified candidates to fill two full-time positions of Laboratory Animal Caretaker for the Department of Comparative Medicine. Each position will require candidates to perform tasks in the following four categories: Animal husbandry - including feeding and watering of animals and sanitation of animal rooms; housekeeping; observations and reporting of animal conditions; and treatment and handling of animals.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Attend to the physical needs of animals in both regular and barrier housing units.
• Feed and water animals.
• Clean and sanitization of cages, racks, food bins, rooms, and other equipment.
• Maintain the general health of laboratory animals.
• Monitor and report animals' conditions and disease.
• Ensure that animals are properly identified and housed.
• Collect and maintain data and records for animal rooms (room activity sheets, procedure room logs, cage wash temperature tape, etc).
• Put new activity sheets in the animal rooms and cage wash area.
• Report and replace broken items in the animal rooms.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Incumbents must have high school diploma or equivalent.
• Must be able to communicate in English fluently with animal care staff, investigators, vendors, and all other NYSPI/RFMH staff.
• Understand the husbandry and care of laboratory rodents.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Prior experience working in a laboratory animal research environment.
• Prior experience handling and caring for animals as a laboratory animal caretaker or certification as an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician is preferred.
