JOB SUMMARY
This position requires processing samples from individuals suspected of COVID-19. The Laboratory Technician in the Molecular Biology clinical laboratory will be responsible for performing nucleic acid-based assays where high level of proficiency in nucleic acid extraction methods and qPCR is required. High proficiency with independent data analysis required. Preferred experience in a high throughput lab where day to day activities are heavily driven by meeting deadlines. Each individual performing high complexity testing must:
Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.
Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
Follow the laboratory's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.
Adhere to safety guidelines, including the appropriate use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either correct the problems or immediately notify the general supervisor, technical supervisor, clinical consultant, or director.
Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications; and perform high complexity testing only under the onsite, direct supervision of a general supervisor qualified under Sec. 493.1461.
Train New Technicians, as assigned.
We have three levels based on the candidates experience, as follows:
Qualifications: **we are mostly looking for L2 techs at all locations currently**
Here is the language directly from the regulations regarding degrees: “Master's degree in medical technology, clinical laboratory, chemical, physical, or biological science; OR 4. Bachelor's degree in medical technology, clinical laboratory, chemical, physical or biological science.”
If someone has a bachelor’s degree that isn’t in the above specified field, then they are not qualified for our openings. If they have a master’s degree in one of the above specified fields, but their undergrad degree is not, the master’s degree covers the regulations. If someone has a master’s degree not in one of the above specified fields, but their bachelor’s degree is, then the bachelor’s degree meets the regulations. Areas of study that do not fit into the above definition include psychology, anthropology, nursing, and public health. Areas of study that do fit into the above categories are biology, chemistry, physics, biochemistry, biophysics, neuroscience, physiology, anatomy, ecology, engineering, and quite a few more. If you are unsure, I can answer on a case by case basis.
For a level one tech, we expect
•a candidate 1 ) has a bachelor’s degree in one of the above fields, and 2) done PCR on their own in a research lab run by a professor or graduate student for ~1-2 years AND/OR has paid experience performing PCR for ~4 months.
For a level two tech, we expect
•a candidate has 1) a bachelor’s degree in one of the above fields and 2) two years of direct paid PCR experience, including analysis.
•a candidate has 2) a master’s degree in one of the above fields and 2) done PCR on their own in a research lab run by a professor or graduate student for ~1-2 years AND/OR has paid experience performing PCR for ~4 months, including analysis.
For a level three tech, we expect
•a candidate has 1) a bachelor’s degree in one of the above fields and 2) four years of direct paid PCR experience, including analysis.
•a candidate has 2) a master’s degree in one of the above fields and 2) two years of direct paid PCR experience, including analysis.
