Orrick currently has an excellent opportunity for a Lawyer Development Manager – Training and Inclusion & Belonging. This position could be based in our New York, Washington DC, San Francisco, or Silicon Valley offices.
The Objective: As the Lawyer Development Manager for Training and Inclusion & Belonging, you will oversee associate development, focusing on firmwide academies and retreats, skills development workshops and boot camps, and associate practice group training. Your goal will be to develop programs that provide the professional skills and feedback necessary for Orrick's attorneys’ career growth and advancement.
What will I do? You will be responsible for the design, development, implementation, management, and assessment of associate development programs. This position will report to the Director, Training and Inclusion & Belonging.
Our ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5-7 years of training/professional development experience within a law firm, legal department, law school, or equivalent, which has included responsibility for developing and administering training programs both live and remotely to multiple offices, and live multi-day large-scale events. If the candidate is an attorney and has not held a specific training role, they should have had experience in designing and implementing training programs or other lawyer or law student development activities. Strong preference for a candidate who has experience working in a global professional services environment. Some travel may be required for large-scale events.
How will I spend my time? You will spend most of your time on these responsibilities:
Responsibilities:- Firm wide development academies, boot camps, and retreats at key associate career transition points: oversee the project lifecycle including, collaborating with firm leaders on direction of programs, working with internal and external presenters to develop content, handling logistics and administration of programs.
- Work closely with our Director, Training and Inclusion & Belonging and Practice Group-specific training teams (e.g., Training Partners, Training Council) to provide substantive legal practice-specific training for associates. Assess training needs, define learning objectives, refine curriculum, develop program content, and ensure program quality.
- Oversee associate skills training initiatives, including clinic, workshop, and boot camp type programming to develop legal writing skills, presentation skills, communication skills, and project management skills.
- Work with external vendors and Orrick’s vendor management office from start to finish to execute on training programming.
- Determine development needs and recommend new initiatives for developing Orrick's associates; ensure that our development efforts support our overall business strategy and needs and align with our Criteria for Advancement and Practice Group Benchmarks. Support initiatives both at a strategic level and on the ground as needed.
- Provide counsel and expertise on training content and method of delivery to Practice Group Managers, members of the Marketing and Sales teams, Chief Practice Officers, Practice Group and Business Unit Leaders to integrate lawyer development programs into global practice group and business unit retreats. Related responsibilities may include conducting research, making recommendations, taking the lead on planning logistics, and real-time execution of training programs.
- Collaborate with senior management of the Talent team on initiatives to foster engagement, including programming focused mentoring and coaching, Inclusion & Belonging, effective communication, and teamship.
- Keep track of and advise on deliverables for upcoming programs, events, and activities on the team’s annual program timeline.
- Organize and categorize file management system to ensure documents are up-to-date, accessible, and complete.
- Collaborate with MCLE team to provide advice and guidance to attorneys, paralegals, and staff on MCLE requirements and compliance. Evaluate program materials to assure compliance with MCLE regulations, with a focus on U.S. jurisdictions in which Orrick has offices. Support the research and design of materials for MCLE eligibility as needed, including working with Orrick’s Creative Services team to design graphic and written content.
- Compile and maintain accurate and up-to-date diversity and inclusion data and metrics, assist in the production of related dashboards and reports.
- Manage, track, and coordinate DEI-related events and programs. Specifics include tracking sponsorship levels and packages, allotted budget, event participants, etc. Further support for events may include overseeing the fulfillment of conference registrations, hotel room reservations, creation of sponsorship ads, and more.
- Collaborate on the development and management of budgets relating to various training and Inclusion & Belonging initiatives.
Qualifications:
- Excellent project manager, ability to understand and synthesize complex requirements of the professional services environment.
- Superior analytical skills, ability to define and understand critical issues, proactive problem-solver. Ability to develop actionable recommendations and implementation plans.
- Commitment to collaboration and ability to work alongside other team members, very strong relationship management skills.
- Ability to delegate effectively to team members and firm resources as appropriate for maximum efficiency.
- Comfortable taking initiative, understanding the big picture, connecting the dots.
- Creativity and enthusiasm for bringing innovative and unique approaches to the delivery of training and development programs.
- Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment and to influence key stakeholders.
- Ability to manage multiple dynamic time-sensitive projects simultaneously, excellent time management skills, organized and responsive.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills. Highly proficient in Microsoft Office apps including Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word (data apps like PowerBI a plus).

Compensation and Benefits
The expected salary range for this position is between:
- California Major Markets* $113,000- $159,000
- New York City $134,000 - $159,000
- National $98,000 - $129,000
* California Major Markets includes San Francisco, Silicon Valley, Los Angeles, Orange County, Santa Monica. All other California locations fall within National range.
Orrick is committed to providing a comprehensive, competitive, and thoughtful total compensation package to our attorneys and staff, wherever they work. This compensation and benefits information is based on the Orrick’s estimate as of the date of publication and may be modified in the future. The level of pay within the range will depend on a variety of job-related factors that may include, but not limited to, qualifications, relevant experience or education, particular skills or expertise, geography. Other compensation may include an annual discretionary merit bonus, which would be determined by Firm and individual performance.
