Summary:
Acts as the primary health care provider performing health care assessments, diagnosis, treatment, preventive health care, instructions and follow-up care to patients in the management of patient and family care following established protocols. Responsible for daily coordination and facilitation of care to provide optimal patient care including: patient education, assessment and follow-up.
Education Requirement:
EDUCATION: Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program.
Experience Requirement:
Two (2) or more years of experience in a clinical setting as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant. Demonstrated ability to independently work and make clinical assessments. Must have an ability and willingness to apply Advanced Practitioner knowledge and skills and maintain clinical competency as required in acute and chronic pain as well as other areas of assignment. Experience with genetics and other surgical services required.
Licensure/Certification Requirement:
- Active unencumbered Tennessee Licensure as a Physician Assistant or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (or registry eligible required). Eligible for Certificate of Fitness (Prescriptive privileges) in State of Tennessee required. AHA BLS, ACLS required.
- Genetic Assessment Certification.
- Certification in cancer genetics counseling and testing.
- Advanced Clinical Genomics Certification preferred.
Key Job Responsibilities:
- Assess, diagnose and prescribe treatment
- Creates care plans
- Orders genetics tests and provides pre and post test counseling
- Provides individual and family risk counseling
- Provides risk assessment
- Provides surveillance recommendations
- Ensures patient care activities are updated and documented according to hospital policies and procedures.
- Ensures charges are documented on unit capture sheet and forwarded to proper location/staff for entry into billing
- system.
- Collects and enters patient information into database system.
- Maintains active credentialing by medical staff.

- Demonstrated ability to develop, present, implement and maintain activities of a new and growing clinical service.
- An ability to manage a sometimes-chaotic work environment related to: unexpected changes in patient throughput or workload, severe or complex patient illness or injury including work with patients with acute, chronic, and complex disease processes.
- Ability to display compassion, acceptance, respect and empathy to patients and family to ensure positive customer relations through caring behaviors.
- Demonstrates skill in the use of applicable equipment. Initiative and mature judgment required; is able to work without direct supervision; shows professional interest through self-development, continuing education, and involvement in professional organizations; presents a positive attitude and professional appearance at all times.
- Ability to give and follow written and oral instructions; ability to communicate effectively with others including patients and staff; ability to react and perform under stress in emergency situations; ability to effectively record and reflect observations.
- Ability to exercise analytical judgment on work to be done; ability to plan and organize work for self and others.
- Exceptional organizational skills are mandatory.
- Ability and willingness to develop, organize and present written reports and presentations.
Supervision provided by this Job:
Medical Director of Cancer and High-Risk program
Physical Demands/Conditions:
Constant walking, standing; lifting and positioning patients/equipment; exposure to infectious agents. Visual acuity is needed to access color changes. Heavy Work - Exerting up to 150 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 75 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 30 pounds of force constantly to move objects. (May be further defined as “with or without assistance.”)
