As a member of the Engineering leadership team, the Aeromechanical Engineering Lead participates in executing the overall engineering product development strategy, team development, and evaluation.Position ResponsibilitiesLeads a group of Aeromechanical, Aerospace, Mechanical, and/or Manufacturing Engineers, including staffing, training, performance evaluation and career development; attracts and retains high caliber staff and provides mentorshipPlans, coordinates, and directs engineering development projects, including product changes and enhancementsDesigns, modifies, develops, and implements aeromechanical/mechanical engineering solutions as an individual contributor and/or team leadPerforms all aspects of vehicle design from initial concept to complete production-ready design.Resolution of design challenges and coordination with multidisciplinary engineering groups.Builds and tests prototype systems in order to validate designsConducts informal and formal presentations.Works with manufacturing organization for the introduction of new designsFrequently interacts with customers and/or functional peer group leaders, and suppliers, normally involving matters between functional areasCollaborates with Program Managers to create and periodically review resource plansEstablishes and assures adherence to budgets, schedules, and work plansOther duties as assignedBasic Qualifications (Required Skills & Experience)Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace, Aeromechanical, Mechanical or related Engineering is required or equivalent combination of education, training, and experienceMinimum 8+ years of relevant engineering experienceMinimum 2+ years successfully leading a teamMinimum 5+ years’ experience on multiple engineering projects including research and development efforts.Demonstrated competence in Mechanical Engineering processes and design/analysis tools, solving Mechanics & Kinematics problemsDemonstrated understanding of metallic, plastic and composite material propertiesDemonstrated ability to solve basic structural dynamics problemsProficiency in SolidWorks, Excel, Word and PowerPoint is requiredDemonstrated understanding of industry design and documentation standards (GD&T, ASME, Change Control, etc.)Experienced with designing: machined parts, composite parts, injection molded parts, sheet metal parts, wire assemblies and mechanical assembliesExperienced with: mechanical, lab, field, flight, and environmental testing.Demonstrated understanding of engineering configuration management processes.Experienced with working from high-level program requirementsAbility to analyze the assigned project, break down work into functional disciplines and/or subsystems and create design/develop plansAbility to obtain at minimum a Secret level DoD security clearanceOther Qualifications & Desired CompetenciesAdvanced degree is preferredHands-on experience with metal and composite fabrication and 3D printing is preferredDemonstrated familiarity with UAVs and related engineering design processes is preferredKnowledge and experience of analytical techniques and tools for FEA, Thermal, Aerodynamics is preferredDemonstrates competency in communicating technically and effectively with multiple disciplinesSkilled at identifying, communicating, and mitigating technical risks and issuesDemonstrates strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skillsExercises independent judgment in methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining resultsUses vision to think beyond the immediate situation, explore multiple potential paths, and adapt decision-making style based on the situational circumstancesInspires, motivates, and empowers people to deliver organizational goals, while also delivering value back to employeesBrings organizational values to life using personality, uniqueness, and the creation of a shared visionChampions the process of change and promotes a culture of quick adaptation while helping others deal with the effects of changeDemonstrates the ability to develop and maintain internal and external trusting, professional relationshipsAssesses the degree of risk and opportunity in plans or actions and takes appropriate action to mitigate them or makes plans to build on the opportunityPhysical DemandsAbility to work in an office environment (Constant)Required to sit and stand for long periods; talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer and telephone keyboard (Frequent)The salary range for this role is:$124,370 - $176,400AeroVironment considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the location, the role and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, education/training, and key skills.ITAR Requirement:This position requires access to information that is subject to compliance with the International Traffic Arms Regulations (“ITAR”) and/or the Export Administration Regulations (“EAR”)
