Job Description:Construction inspectors must comprehensively perform procedures, operations and techniques, and utilize tools, materials and equipment appropriate to area of public works construction inspection, fabrication inspection, and/or materials sampling and testing.
Principles, practices, means, and methods of construction quality assurance, estimating, reporting; basic engineering calculations; basic construction surveying, and health and safety requirements related to construction projects; construction safety practices. Areas of knowledge shall also include one or more of the following disciplines: Civil/Structural (earthwork operations, underground utility construction, reinforced concrete, structural steel construction, masonry, construction materials sampling and testing); Electrical (electrical equipment and materials installation and testing, troubleshooting and commissioning); or Mechanical (mechanical equipment installation and testing, welding, pipefitting, and fabrication, testing, troubleshooting and commissioning); applicable federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations; and current office technology and equipment. Projects may include buildings, roadways, pipelines, dams, spillways, pump stations and transportation.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- As a Public Works Inspector, experience with test methods and inspection procedures for a variety of tests for various types of construction (i.e. soil compaction tests, strength tests, water pressure tests and more).
- Experienced with site and building inspections, fabrication inspections, and materials testing on construction projects in accordance with contract plans and specifications.
- Assists with the administration of the specifications, policies and procedures and reports violations or deviations.
- Ability to assist engineering materials tests, studies, investigations, and forensic and engineering evaluations.
- Prepares a detailed daily diary documenting construction actions and activities, including a variety of reports related to the construction inspection.
- Adheres to safety practices and policies.
- Assists with performing constructability reviews of plans and specifications and reviewing as-built drawings for accuracy.
- Communicate effectively with contractors, engineers, public agency personnel, and others to ensure plan and specifications conformance.
- Prepares and verifies contract quantity for contract summary payments, check grade and alignments, and verify materials for use.
- Assists with preparing estimates for contract change orders or extra work.
- Assists with the training of personnel in inspection techniques, procedures, specifications, testing methods and report preparation.
- Performs other related Construction Inspector job duties.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or general education development test (GED) and six years of increasingly responsible, relevant journey level experience in one or more crafts, or construction materials sampling and testing and per applicable codes and standards, or fabrication inspection and testing per applicable codes and standards.
- Ability to perform basic engineering calculations; use of spreadsheets; apply safe work practices;
- Read and understand contract specifications and drawings; problem solve; prioritize and multi-task;
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing;
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; work independently and in a team environment; and operate current office equipment including computers and supporting applications.
Certifications and Licensing:
Employees in this position may be required to obtain and maintain the following certifications, licensing and/or registrations:
- American Welding Society – Certified Welding Inspector
- American Concrete Institute – Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I
- American Concrete Institute – Concrete Strength Testing Technician
- American Concrete Institute – Concrete Aggregate Testing Technician Level I License
- Valid California Class C Driver License that allows you to drive in the course of your employment.
Offered rate of compensation will be based on a variety of non-discriminatory factors, including education, qualifications, experience, and geographic location. The Salary range for this position is $105,000-$135,000.
