About the Job
As a Senior Controls Engineer, you will be responsible for designing and developing world-class custom automation systems, working closely with a team of sales professionals, designers, and builders. You’ll focus on industries that require precision, such as automotive, aerospace, defense, medical equipment, and pharmaceutical manufacturing. Your role will involve overseeing the design process, mentoring junior engineers, and ensuring the successful build and implementation of custom automation systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Design control systems for custom automation projects, including power distribution, PLC, station panel layouts, pneumatics, and instrumentation using AutoCAD.
- Write, document, and debug software, ensuring systems are production-ready after power-up.
- Collaborate with the Project Manager to ensure budgets and schedules are met.
- Work closely with the Controls Assembly Department during the build phase, providing timely solutions.
- Lead and mentor Level I and Level II Controls Engineers, facilitating both formal and informal training.
- Participate in machine installations and provide technical support during the project lifecycle.

- PLC Systems: Allen Bradley (CompactLogix, ControlLogix, MicroLogix), Siemens, Square D.
- HMI Systems: Allen Bradley (Panelview, Panelview Plus), Siemens (TP, OP Series).
- Communications: Allen Bradley (Ethernet I/P, ControlNet, DeviceNet), Siemens (Profibus).
- Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs): Allen Bradley Powerflex, SEW Eurodrive.
- Robotics: Denso, Epson, FANUC, Kuka, Kawasaki.
- Linear Actuators: Festo, Rexroth, Tolomatic, Intelligent Actuator.
- Servos: Allen Bradley (Kinetics 6000), Yaskawa.
- Vision Systems: Keyence, Panasonic, Cognex.
- Data Acquisition: Keithley (DAS-1400, DAS-1600).
Desired Software Competency:
- PLC Programming: Allen Bradley (RSLogix 5000, RSLogix 500), Siemens (Step 7, TIA Portal).
- HMI Programming: Allen Bradley (FactoryTalk View Studio, RSView), Siemens (ProTool).
- Communications Tools: RSNetworks, RSLinx, Ethernet, ControlNet, DeviceNet, Profibus.
- Robotics Programming: Adept V+, QuickBasic, Python, C++.
- Servos Programming: Allen Bradley (Kinetics 6000), SEW (Motion Studio).
- Application Development: Visual Basic, National Instruments LabWindows.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Electrical or related field).
- 7+ years of controls engineering experience in custom automation.
- Minimum of 3 years of AutoCAD design experience.
- Proficiency with PLC and HMI systems, as well as familiarity with robotic systems and servos.
- Experience in industries like automotive, aerospace, defense, and medical equipment is a plus.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
This position includes day-to-day supervision and development of Level I and Level II Controls Engineers.
Additional Information:
- Full-time role, requiring 48 hours per week.
- Occasional evening and weekend work may be required based on project demands.
- Travel will be approximately 20% of the time.
