Eversource’s Resilience and Reliability group focuses on implementing a data-driven investment strategy to harden the electric transmission and distribution grid to mitigate and adapt to climate change and to enable a modern, digital and decarbonized grid. The problems that this Lead Engineer position will tackle are at the crux of today’s power systems challenges; the looming impacts of climate change, rapid electrification and the penetration of renewable energy resources mandate a drastic shift in utility planning, budgeting and operations and make resilience and reliability the key to grid modernization and decarbonization. The ideal candidate is highly experienced in distribution system planning and modeling and has a good understanding of resilience and reliability and/ or protection and controls. This lead engineer will propose specific investments, including wires solutions, station solutions and non-wires alternatives, to achieve Eversource’s strategic goals and work with internal stakeholders on requisite project approvals and authorizations. This role is highly cross-functional with regular interactions with a variety of other groups including Distribution Engineering, Vegetation Management, Electric Operations and Regulatory. This role will have plenty of opportunities for presentations both internally at Eversource and externally, e.g., at professional organizations like IEEE.
Essential Functions:
- Molds the long-term company-wide resilience and reliability strategy by developing, linking and applying new and existing resiliency and reliability planning methods, models, equipment and technologies.
- Leads the development of engineering modeling for resilience and reliability planning.
- Supports the development of analytics tools needed for resilience and reliability planning by providing guidance on the engineering logic and principles
- Stays up to date with industry best practices and standards on resilience and reliability including new planning models, equipment and technologies and evaluates their applicability given Eversource’s strategic goals.
- Drives regulatory responses and ensures company engagement and representation in applicable regulatory proceedings.
- Works closely and across multiple departments to ensure resiliency plans, programs and specific projects are vetted, socialized, accepted and consistent with the rest of the company’s programs.
- Supports proactive asset programs and works with the Distribution Engineering and Asset Management teams, including actively contributing to the development of tools and processes to understand the impact of asset health to reliability.
- Leads a team of up to four (4) engineers and supports the hiring process as needed.
- Self-imposes standards of excellence and has the ability to achieve desired results by effectively prioritizing work for themselves and their team and assuming responsibility and accountability to promote Eversource’s customer first standards.
- Engages directly with vendors, partners, and government entities to support the development of new methods, obtain novel equipment, software and technology, initiate and support studies, to enable the transition to a more resilient system.
- Develops RFPs and procures services and technology as needed
- Leads the project authorization and approval processes for the proposed resilience and reliability capital projects.
- Serves during emergency restoration efforts.
- Presents internally to stakeholders as well as externally, for example in professional organizations like IEEE.
Technical Knowledge/Skill/Education/Licenses/Certifications:
Technical Knowledge/Skill:
- Highly knowledgeable in electric distribution systems and system planning.
- Demonstrated experience with commercial distribution power flow models; familiarity with Synergi is preferred.
- Thorough understanding of distribution reliability and resiliency and protection and control.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze, infer and interpret information to solve highly complex problems.
- Able to understand the utility business model and the regulatory requirements and correspondingly align the company-wide resilience and reliability strategy
- Skilled in working cross functionally with multiple other teams inside and outside system planning and with team members of various different backgrounds
- Must be an effective presenter
- Intermediate Excel skills.
- Experience in coding (Matlab, Python, SQL), databases or PowerBI is a plus.
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering required
- Advanced degree preferred
Experience:
- Minimum of eight (8) years of experience in Distribution Engineering or Planning in a utility environment, or a related business area. Advanced degree work may supplement years of industry experience.
Working Conditions:
- Must be available to work emergency restoration assignment as required.
- Must be available to travel between MA/CT/NH as necessary.
Compensation and Benefits:
- Eversource offers a competitive total rewards program. The annual salary range for this position is $137,310.00 - $152,570.00 plus incentive. Salary is commensurate with your experience. Check out the career site for an overview of benefits.
