BASIC FUNCTION:
The Lead Mechanic work assignment will include, but not limited to, facilitating the inspection, troubleshooting and minor repair of all general mechanical, plumbing, electrical systems, and carpentry, including equipment throughout Ellis Hospital and its off-sites, himself or using general mechanics assigned to the Lead Engineering Mechanic. Facilitating project work is required to the extent of planning, layout and ordering modifications to existing systems or new installations. Monitors and complete work orders or other duties as assigned by the manager.
The Lead Engineering Mechanic will be skilled varied to understand and act upon general repairs in regards to the Hospital setting and capable of leading a team to accomplish repairs.
- Demonstrates a through knowledge of the technical requirements of the position and uses this knowledge to make informed decisions in his areas of responsibilities. Practices state of the art technology in his field and utilizes best practice.
- Knowledgeable of all codes governing his areas of responsibilities, including but not limited to JCAHO, NFPA, NYSDEC, EPA and NYSDOH.
- Utilizes the computerized maintenance management system to maintain and document the activities of hospital equipment. Properly documents all work activities through the established protocols.
- Capable of mentoring staff in regards to general maintenance activities.
SECTION II
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
The incumbent must be a Mechanic II, a high school graduate and/or hold a two (2) year certificate or Associate Degree from a trade or vocational school. Related experience will be considered as a substitute for the certificate/degree provided that:
The experience consists of at least minimum 2 years in hospital general mechanical, general electrical, General HVAC, General Carpentry fields, and patient care equipment.
The incumbent has the ability to read and understand mechanical drawings, schematics and specifications.
The incumbent has experience with commercial tools, drill press, welding machine, pipe threader,
Electrical hand held test equipment, multiple types of rotary equipment, Cutting equipment, and mechanic hand tools.
The incumbent has the ability to prepare and request written estimates and reports.
The incumbent has knowledge of basic electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and carpentry trades.
The incumbent must have a home telephone (for emergency or on-call contact), valid driver’s license (to operate hospital vehicles) and a reliable means of transportation to the hospital at all hours.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Considerable walking, climbing, stooping and lifting of moderate to heavy objects weighing 50 pounds or less. Working inside and outside the facility, the incumbent will be exposed to extremes of temperature and weather conditions, high noise levels, dusty/dirty environments and patient care areas with patients having various illnesses. Standard safety and protective equipment will be supplied by the hospital.

Perform general plumbing repairs and installations to systems throughout the hospital.
1.
Repairs hot/cold water systems/services steam/hot water heating systems and associated pumps.
2.
Installs and repairs sinks, toilets, hoppers, and basins.
3.
Repairs and installs fire protection system components such as stand pipes, sprinklers and valves.

B.
Inspects, diagnoses and makes repairs to mechanical equipment.
1.
Repairs and installs pumps and components of the following: hot/cold water circulating, condenser and chilled water cooling towers, vacuum, and condensate returns.
2.
Diagnose and repair of the following equipment: autoclaves, blanket warmers, sonic washers, washing machines, dryers, Food Service equipment and mechanical beds.
C.
Inspects, diagnoses and repairs air handling, ventilation and exhaust systems.
1.
Repairs and installs the following: steam coils, steam traps, hot water coils, chilled water coils, hot water heat converters and re-heat coils.
2.
Troubleshoot and repair all types of pneumatic and electrical temperature controls such as thermostats, relays, controllers, regulators, and damper motors, humidifying equipment and actuating valves.
3.
Maintain water treatment levels for cooling tower and heating systems.

Inspects, coordinates and work with other hospital personnel and outside contractors to ensure quality work, safety and cost effective/timely completion of work.

I.
Appropriate Personal Protective Equipment is utilized when performing a task or responsibility associated with this position which represents a potential occupational risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens.
1.
Demonstrates knowledge of the appropriate level of personal protective equipment to be used in relation to the specific tasks and responsibilities.
Appropriate PPE’s shall include but not be limited to gloves, gown, goggles, laboratory coat, face shields or masks.
2.
Degree of compliance as measured by personal observation of immediate supervisors/managers.
Salary Range: $25.72-$38.57 /hour Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.
