Primary Responsibilities of the Position:
- Helping Sanford Health patients live a healthier more active lifestyle with our Sanford Health Special Populations
- Administering programming of small group training while maintaining a consistent client base for personal training
- Supporting individuals with Sanford Health services achieve their health and wellness goals within Special Populations inclusive of Cardiac Rehab, Weight Management, Oncology, and other Sanford Health patient services
- Completing outreach both internally and externally in presentations and opportunities to support Sanford Health departments achieve Health and Wellness for all our patients
- Building and managing growth of programming to promote, train and lead new and current staff to build these services (inclusive of reporting, data collection, participate and program successes)
- Must currently hold or acquire one or more “Special Population” certifications – willing to provide financial assistance as applicable for achievement of these certifications
- Certifications can include but are not limited to: “Exercise is Medicine”, “Cancer Exercise Specialist”, “SAIL certification”, “Certified Special Population certification”
**Job Summary**
Demonstrates expert knowledge in the field of exercise science and fitness for all populations taking into account previous injuries/limitation, chronic/acute disease and a special population diagnosis. Demonstrates ability to maintain administrative duties such as developingping schedules for staff, classes, and programs, oversees the intern training program, leads trainer meetings, trains/ and mentors exercise specialists and deals with disciplinary issues when necessary. Must be able to design and progress individuals through training programs based on standards from American College of Sports Medicine, National Strength and Conditioning, American Council of Exercise, and National Academy of Sports Medicine.
Leads the orientation and training process of all new staff into the personal training and gym staffing positions. Handles continuing education for the exercise specialist, monthly meetings, staffing schedules, assigns or participates in media requests and other duties as assigned. This individual will be expected to expand programming and revenue sources along with fellow leaders.
Assists with fitness assessments and fitness-related education programs. Participates in planning and implementing individual/group fitness programs. Coordinates social media requests upon request, as well as community events. Participates in health condition assessments. Administers fitness testing procedures and interprets test results for individuals.
Coordinates the development of exercise/fitness programs for low, medium and high-risk populations. Assigns clients and members to exercise specialists appropriately based on needs. Works with memberships on personal training goals and revenue objectives.
Maintains fitness equipment while inspecting and assisting with maintenance as needed. Possesses thorough knowledge of human physiology and the ability to prescribe exercise according to accepted guidelines. Performs physiologic assessments including body fat analysis, blood pressure and strength assessments.
Teaches additional fitness classes when needed. Develops and instructs one on one and small group training sessions. Instructs participants in maintaining exertion levels to maximize benefits from exercise routines. Teaches proper breathing techniques used during physical exertion. Offers alternatives during fitness classes and private training sessions in order to accommodate to different levels of fitness. Promotes Wellness Center memberships through staff training, member promotions, and training/retaining clients, and strives to maintain member retention through communication and knowledge.
Oversee the medical referral programs through Sanford Hospital. Trains the exercise specialist on working with various populations using the standards from nationally accredited organizations.
Supervises on the floor addressing responsibilities such as maintaining fitness equipment and locker rooms as needed. Ensures the overall environment is safe, clean and presentable. Is able to deal with situations as they relate to gym etiquette (age requirements for equipment usage, members respecting each other and equipment, medical emergencies and various situations that may arise). After the initial situation, will be a part of the follow-up process. Is able to step into a higher level of leadership when other staff are absent.
Able to represent Sanford Hospital values during fitness/wellness talks for the hospital and the community. At times, will be responding to media opportunities (TV, radio, social media, etc).
**Qualifications**
Bachelor’s degree in exercise science or related field required.
Minimum of four years experience in wellness coaching behavior modification, and leadership required.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or obtain within 60 days of hire
A nationally accredited personal training certification is required. If an applicant does not hold this certification, 1 year will be given to receive this certification. A certification from these organizations is preferred: American College of Sports Medicine CPT or CSCS, National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), American Council of Fitness (ACE), or National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM).
