POSITION SUMMARY:
The Federal Income Tax Compliance group is responsible for analyzing, compiling, and filing the federal income tax returns for Marathon Petroleum Corporation and its subsidiaries. This position reports to the Manager, Income Tax.
KEY RESPONSIBILITES:
+ Technical Tax and Legislative Support
+ Serve as a tax subject matter expert (federal corporate and partnership tax compliance)
+ Provide technical tax/ASC 740 research and support to the entire organization.
+ Prepare and/or review tax technical memoranda on various transactions and issues.
+ Stay current with changes in tax laws, regulations, and industry trends, and proactively educate on potential impacts.
+ Provides tax return project support and tax analysis
+ Provide technical tax training to lesser experienced team members
+ Manages coordination and communication with IRS CAP Audit Team, State Authorities, or External Auditors
+ Interface with tax authorities/external auditors regarding IDR’s and establish good relationships.
+ Provides technical analysis and supporting law to defend tax positions
+ Provide information to tax planning team regarding audit implications of planning ideas.
+ Work with outside advisors on specific projects.
+ Review of compliance regarding transactions
+ Interface with personnel within the tax department and other corporate departments on audit related issues.
+ Assists with tax modeling process for M&A activity, tax legislation, and any reorganization activity.
+ Participate/Lead in Tax Department special projects and assignments.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
+ Bachelor’s degree is required. Majors in Accounting/ Business/ Finance related field is preferred
+ Eight (8) plus years of Federal Income Tax experience is required
+ Developing skills and expertise of tax rules and regulations is highly preferred.
+ Experience reviewing complex schedule M adjustments preferred.
+ Experience with TCJA tax law regulations would be preferred.
SKILLS:
+ Strong subject matter expertise within income tax and broad exposure to other areas of tax.
+ Strong written and oral communication skills with ability to communicate tax issues to non-tax team members.
+ Strong ability to work well across all functions of the business (Finance, Accounting, Legal, Operations, etc.).
+ Ability to lead many projects from beginning to end with minimal oversight.
+ Displays ability to lead, develop, and engage others within the tax organization.
