BASIC FUNCTION
The primary function of a charge nurse is to provide direct nursing care to residents and to supervise the day-to-day nursing activities performed by nursing assistants. Such supervision must be in accordance with current federal, state and local standards, guidelines and regulations that govern the facility and may be required by the Director of Nursing or Nurse Supervisor to ensure that the highest degree of quality care is maintained at all times.
REPORTS TO: Director of Nursing, Assistant Director of Nursing
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Must possess a current, unencumbered, active license to practice as an LPN in this state
- Must be able to read, write and speak English
- Must demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age-related needs of the residents.
- Must be supportive of team-work
- Must have the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action
- Must be able to deal with personnel, residents, family members, visitors in a respectful manner.
- Must be knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well as laws, regulations, and guidelines that pertain to nursing care facilities.
- Must have leadership and supervisory qualities and the ability and willingness to work with and supervise other personnel
- Must have the ability to plan, organize, develop, implement and interpret the program goals, objectives, policies and procedures that are necessary to providing quality care.
- Must have patience, tact, a cheerful disposition and enthusiasm, as well as the willingness to handle difficult residents.
- Must be able to relate information concerning a resident’s condition.
- Must not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
- Admit, transfer, discharge residents as required per policy and procedures.
- Complete accident/incident reports as necessary per policies and procedures.
- Receive telephone orders from physicians and record on the Physicians’ Order form.
- Transcribe physician’s orders to resident charts, Kardex, medication cards, treatment/care plans as required.
- Record new/changed diet orders. Forward information to dietary department.
- Perform routine charting duties as required and in accordance with established charting and documentation policies and procedures.
- Sign and date all entries made in the medical record
- Perform “Five Rights of Medical Administration”
- Ensure that narcotic records are accurate for your shift.
- Order prescribed medications, supplies, and equipment as necessary
- Notify the Director of Nursing of all drug and narcotic discrepancies noted in your shift
- Monitor the confidentiality of all residents.
- Report and investigate all allegations of resident abuse and/or misappropriation of resident property.
- Perform other roles and responsibilities as required.
