Job Description
The Licensed Practical Nurse performs routine health care and basic nursing duties for inmates and staff in the Detention Center in order to ensure that the proper medical treatment and preventative care is provided.
Essential Functions:
- Assists the nurse and physician in examinations and treatment.
- Responds to and provides medical care in emergency situations; calls EMS as necessary.
- Assists the nurse and physician with daily sick call.
- Prepares and dispenses medication to inmates as prescribed by the nurse or physician.
- Assists in maintaining health care records for inmates.
- Performs basic health screenings and routine tests; gives insulin injections; draws blood for testing; irrigates ears and eyes; cleans, medicates and bandages wounds, etc.
- Assists in facilitating crisis care for psychiatric patients.
- Schedules appointments for inmates with physicians, dentists, mental health professionals, Health Department representatives, etc. Schedules x-rays and lab work.
- Maintains security when working with inmates.
- Remains on call after regular working hours and on weekends.
- Performs a variety of administrative tasks, including maintaining records, processing mail, answering the telephone, etc.
- Receives and reviews records and reports including medical, dental, and mental records, medication logs and invoices.
- Maintains appointment book, lab reports, incident reports, diet sheets, release forms for medical records, etc.
- Operates and maintains a variety of office equipment, standard equipment, and supplies used for the examination, diagnosis and treatment of inmates. Exercises care and safety in the use of equipment and tools required to complete assigned tasks.
- Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals.
- Performs various laboratory tests such as pregnancy tests.
Non-Essential Functions:
- Maintains all inmate medical files.
- Performs all other related duties as required.
Qualifications: Education and Work Experience
- This position requires a Licensed Practical Nursing Degree supplemented by two to three years experience in nursing, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
- Experience in emergency medicine and/or correctional institutions is highly desired.
- Must have the ability to work within the security confines of the detention settings.
- Must be able to work effectively with other employees.
- Must have CPR certification.
- Must have current LPN Certification.
- Required to work some nights and weekends.

- Must be able to reach, bend, stoop, carry, move and lift 100 lb. objects regularly.
- Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- The employee must have the ability to travel up to 5%.
