Performs direct, technical nursing care and functions in accordance with the patient treatment plan and physician orders. Administers medications specified by proper policy and procedures. Collects and documents clinical data including assessment data. Assists with the planning and evaluation of patient care.

Job Summary:

Essential Functions:
- Supervises nursing assistants/mental health assistants.
- Is a resource for direct care during shift.
- Provides comprehensive care to the psychiatric patient to include physical, emotional and mental intervention.
- Provides accurate response to ordered medications, IV’s and procedures in a(n) stressed/emergency situation which may include Code Blue or Code Gray.
- Maintains updated CPR and NCI certification.
- Is knowledgeable in the set up and operation of equipment used on the Medical/Surgical Unit.
- Performs procedures specific to medical/surgical to ensure a successful outcome.
- Is aware of psychosocial needs of the patient and applies appropriate intervention. Must have the ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of patient’s needs, knowledge of psychiatric conditions, understands the aging process and the treatment needed to protect the patient.
- Works cooperatively with staff, families and physicians by exhibiting a willing attitude.
- Demonstrates accuracy in all aspects of medication administration, accurately enters home medications in the medication profile, verifies home medications on admission, verifies physician orders against pharmacy transcription, bar scans high alert medications, uses appropriate patient identifiers and provides accurately reconciled mediations on discharge.
- Follows the standards for infection control, utilizing hand washing, protective wear and isolation techniques. Properly disposes of contaminated items. Demonstrates a strong knowledge of aseptic and sterile techniques. Confidently announces when contamination occurs and demonstrates corrective actions taken for patient safety.
- Effectively and willingly orients new staff to the department, policies, procedures and the culture of the department and hospital.
- Consistently adheres to departmental quality measures.
- Attends and participates in education in-services to remain current in physical and psychiatric intervention skills. -Attends all mandatory meetings as well as, keeps up with memos and departmental communication.
Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Graduate of an approved, accredited School of Practical Nursing as well as successful completion of Pharmacology course work necessary to administer medications.
- Possesses current State License to practice nursing.
- Six-month to one year experience (including medication administration) in an acute care hospital and previous work with medical/surgical preferred.
- Interpersonal skills necessary to interact with patients and their families. Demonstrates empathy and sensitivity necessary to elect therapeutic patient care.
- Knowledge of the aging process and its impact on the psychological well-being of the patients.
- Assists with Nursing Group Therapy as directed by Registered Nurse.
- Current BLS certification. NCI certification maintained.
