Summary:
Under the direct supervision of the Clinical Manager and the general supervision of the Professional Registered Nurse assists in caring for patient and/or families from admission to discharge with consideration of the aging process throughout the lifespan including all developmental stages as well as cultural patterns.
Responsibilities:
Responsible for the safe delivery of patient care:
- Assists the Professional Nurse with the assessment of nursing care needs and implementation of the plan of care.
- Performs selected procedures and treatments according to standards and protocols.
- Inserts intravenous lines to include INTs.
- Hangs labeled intravenous solutions to include 20 meq KCL/Liter and vitamins as per policy and procedure.
- Suctions patients (naso/pharyngeal and orally).
- Sets up enteral feedings primes tubing sets up pump positions patient flushes feeding adds ordered nutrients adds free water clamps tubing reports deviation in flow rate reports patient�s response.
- Measures central venous pressure. Changes sterile dressings to include CVP those with tubes drains and/or subcutaneous packing.
- Performs tracheostomy care to include inflating and deflating cuffs suctioning and cleaning of the inner cannula.
- Removes patient from ventilator and manually ventilates (ambu).
- Inserts urinary catheters except in-patients with genitourinary repair and in pediatric patients. Irrigates Foley catheters whether intermittent or continous.
- Irrigates and packs selected non-communicating wounds above the level of the fascia nasogastric tubes (except in fresh post-operative gastric surgery or iced saline irrigation) and gastrointestinal tubes.
- Administers medications and treatments as approved by RIH policy and procedures.
- Organizes work and sets priorities in collaboration with the professional registered nurse.
- Reports all pertinent observations. Documents observations of patient condition changes in patient condition response to intervention and any action taken to influence -the care of the patient.
- Records selected treatments and procedures for which she/he is responsible.
- Maintains patient and family confidentiality according to established hospital standards for it.
- Serves as an active patient/family advocate.
- Performs duties generally described in CNAI and CNAII position description.
- Works collaboratively with other healthcare providers.
- Assists with cardiac monitoring sets alarm limits recognized NSR reports lethal dysrhythmias.
- Cares for patient receiving intravenous fluids sets up IVs (no meds) primes tubing sets up pump.
- Assists with the identification of learning needs and with the development of a plan to meet those needs.
- Supports and reinforces teaching done by the Professional Registered Nurse.
Responsible for emergency and safety conduct:
- Identifies cardiopulmonary arrest and initiates CPR.
- Demonstrates adherence to universal precautions safety programs and other infection control measures.
- Reviews fire disaster and infection control in manual.
- Demonstrates ability to perform responsibilities in emergency/code situations. Checks emergency equipment.
- Reports unsafe situations to the Professional Registered Nurse or to the Clinical Manager.
- Lifts correctly to avoid harm to self. Utilizes assistive devices when available.
- Maintains an environment conducive to patient comfort and safety.
- Exercises proper care in the use of equipment and reports need to repair to the appropriate person.
- Utilizes side rails and restraints in accordance with nursing procedure and policy of Rhode Island Hospital.
- Adheres to fall precaution protocol.
- Adheres to constant observation protocols as assigned.

- Utilizes time equipment and supplies in a cost-effective manner.
- Participates in unit activities including meetings and projects such as Quality Assurance and Improvement.

- Participates in appropriate staff education programs to maintain and expand job knowledge and skills.
- Establishes annual developmental goals in collaboration with Clinical Manager.
- Utilizes appropriate resources in administering care to patient and families.
Other information:
BASIC KNOWLEDGE:
Must have current licensure to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the State of Rhode Island.
Successful completion of the hospital�s patient care delivery orientation program which includes entry level credentialing of selected skills.
Certified in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS).
Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
EXPERIENCE:
Two years medical/surgical nursing experience and telemetry experience is required.
Two years endoscopy experience preferred.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Physical ability for extensive walking and standing; lifting positioning and pushing patients on stretchers.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None.
