Shift: Varies. Lifeguard certification preferred.
Job Summary: The Lifeguard is responsible for ensuring the direct supervision, control, and safety of participants during recreational, fitness, and instructional swimming activities.
Education, Training, and Experience: Candidates must be at least 16 years old. Upon hire, certifications in Professional Rescue CPR or Basic Life Support, First Aid, Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and Oxygen Administration (O2) are required. Within the first 30 days of hire, completion of Child Abuse Prevention in an Aquatics Environment training is mandatory. Within 90 days of hire, Foundations of Listen First training is required. Current lifeguard certification (Red Cross accepted; crossover to YMCA within 90 days or first available training). Certified Pool Operator, Life Guard Trainer, and Get SMART certifications are preferred. Familiarity with the YMCA's local, national, and international operations is advantageous.
Special Skills or Equipment Required: Effective communication and human relations skills are essential. Annual completion of swim and skills tests is required. Ability to relate to individuals of all ages and backgrounds within the community. Physical requirements include endurance for prolonged periods of standing and sitting, and the capability to engage in 15-30 minutes of aerobic activity. Must be alert and possess auditory and verbal capabilities to monitor swimmer safety and effectively communicate with staff and participants. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform rescues as needed.
Job Duties:
- Provide direct supervision and maintain high safety standards during recreational, fitness, and instructional swims.
- Exemplify the SMART pledge in all aspects of duty.
- Ensure a nurturing and safe environment by promptly reporting suspicious activities and maintaining facility cleanliness and equipment care.
- Maintain cleanliness of deck and locker rooms.
- Ensure equipment is properly stored and deck is clear.
- Follow opening and closing procedures diligently.
- Engage in positive public relations with members while maintaining a professional demeanor and wearing the staff uniform.
- Possess thorough knowledge of emergency procedures and administer first aid as necessary.
- Arrive punctually for scheduled shifts, ensuring readiness at least ten minutes before pool opening.
- Fulfill other duties as assigned, including reporting all serious incidents and participating in staff meetings and in-service trainings.
- Serve as a role model in promoting pool safety at all times.
