The directorate of children’s cardiac services includes congenital cardiac surgery and paediatric cardiology, where the team work closely with the paediatric intensive care and the WATCh transport service for the Southwest and South Wales. We provide a full range of services for children with congenital heart disease, together with short-term mechanical support (ECMO) where indicated - but excluding long-term mechanical support and transplantation.
Main duties of the job
The Paediatric cardiology department comprises of approximately 11 whole-time equivalent paediatric cardiologists with various interests and specialities. There is a 1:10 on call paediatric cardiology rota and a 1:3 paediatric cardiology intervention rota. All consultants deliver between four and five ‘service weeks’ per year. There is an expectation that you will take part in the Regional CHD Network and will provide ‘tertiary’ clinics in at least one of our referring District Hospitals.

Minimum Requirements
- Full and specialist registration in either AIM or GIM with the General Medical Council (GMC)
- Eligible for specialist registration within six months of interview *Locum candidates do not need specialist registration
- Higher academic qualification e.g. MD, PhD or equivalent
Training and Experience
- Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in paediatric cardiology and cardiac intervention
- Able to take responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision
- Evidence of a special interest and expertise that complements those of other consultants in the department
Clinical Knowledge and Skills
- Up to date knowledge and experience of relevant specialty
- Knowledge of NHS priorities with reference to specialty
- Broad range of IT skills
Clinical Governance, Audit
- Understanding of clinical governance and the individual responsibilities it implies
- Knowledge of the principles of clinical audit and evidence of participation
- Positive approach to evidence-based practice
- Participation in continuing professional development (CPD) scheme and, where relevant, evidence thereof
Research
- Knowledge of the principles involved in research
- Evidence of involvement in research
- Evidence of peer-reviewed research papers
- Ability to increase the academic profile of the department
Teaching and Training
- Experience of teaching medical students.
- Experience of supervising trainees.
- Knowledge of teaching to a multidisciplinary team
- Formal teaching qualification
Interpersonal, Communication and Team Working Skills
- Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives, clinical colleagues, support staff and other colleagues.
- Good knowledge of, and ability to use, spoken and written English.
