About the Job
Palo Alto Veterans Institute for Research (PAVIR is looking for a full-time Research Associate I. This position will advance scientific research related to myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN), a type of chronic blood cancer. The Research Associate I will perform laboratory-based research focused on advancing the understanding of MPN biology with the goal of developing new and improved treatment approaches for patients. Working closely with research colleagues and health services professionals, the Research Associate I will perform laboratory research, including using MPN mouse models. The position involves performing and dissemination of novel scientific research results related to enhancing health services for Veterans with blood cancers.
We are seeking exceptionally motivated candidates with a strong background in hematopoiesis to join a dynamic and expanding research group studying the biology and treatment of myeloid malignancies, with a particular focus on myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN).

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conduct laboratory-based research on MPN and myeloid blood cancers including mouse-related studies;
- Present findings in 1:1 meetings with PI and in lab meetings with peers and colleagues;
- Perform data analysis and develop findings; document and store results in a carefully annotated manner;
- Conduct literature reviews;
- Create drafts for publication;
- Present results at scientific meetings and conferences;
- Apply findings to the development of novel treatment approaches for veterans;
- Ensure that research requirements, protocols, schedules, and deliverables are met;
- Advance research in MPN by contributing to grant proposals and developing new research directions;
- Other research activities as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Required: Ph.D. or M.D.;
- At least 5 years of prior research experience in biology and hematopoiesis;
- Strong skills in laboratory-based research including molecular & cellular biology techniques;
- Strong skills in flow cytometry, functional genomics & proficiency with mouse models;
- Excellent organizational skills;
- Excellent communication skills (written and verbal);
- High competency in data analysis, developing demonstrable research results, and presenting findings to different audiences;
- High degree of scientific creativity, productivity, and ability to work independently;
- Ability to supervise & train junior colleagues, students and research technicians;
- Ability to collaborate and work closely with multi-disciplinary teams and multisite organizations;
- Ability to generate and contribute to research grant applications; ability to write and submit manuscripts for publication;
- Competence in rapidly building rapport across diverse environments;
- Ability to think independently and develop novel hypotheses for testing;
- Preferred: Degree in biomedical life sciences. Experience in hematology research, ideally on blood cancers;
- Experience in mouse modeling.
