Job Description

The Instrument Design and Fabrication Core Facility, is an ASU Knowledge Enterprise Core facility. The Instrument shop is an ISO 9001:2015 and AS9100D certified facility and is seeking to fill multiple Machinist Sr. positions in our research machine shop. In this position, you will work closely and collaboratively with several university departments to provide the required manufacturing process support necessary for ongoing research projects. Under shop management direction, you will contribute to the optimal, efficient, and safe operation of multiple shop equipment.

This position requires hands on work in a prototype environment working from concept designs to machine component(s) and assemblies. Machining and inspection of components are a major part of the current range of responsibilities. This position supports all ASU professors and research scientists along with peer institution specialized projects, and occasionally require you work directly with the researcher, their lab managers, doctoral candidates and master degree student specialized projects.

Salary Range

$24.12 - $30.15 per hour; DOE

Essential Duties

• Fabrication of mechanical instrument components, assemblies and prototype parts utilizing a wide variety of equipment and machinable materials
• Fabricate needed fixtures and holding jigs for instrument fabrication
• Inspect assigned work to verify accuracy within tolerances and requested specifications are met to facilitate research success
• Machining metal and metal alloys, plastics and other machinable materials along with machinable ceramics
• Maintain required level of laboratory safety training to perform routine, daily duties
• Must be able to read and interpret hand drawn sketches and CAD generated part drawing prints
• Perform routine maintenance and in-house repairs of toolroom machinery and support equipment
• Set-up, program and operate 2-axis, 2-1/2 & 3-axis CNC mills and lathes along with second operation supporting toolroom machine tools
• Understands quality assurance/control (QA/QC) equipment and procedures

Minimum Qualifications

Six years of recent machinist experience in a toolroom environment; OR, Completion of a two-year machine tool technology program and 4 years’ toolroom machinist experience. Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

• Six (6) years of recent machinist experience in a toolroom environment; OR, Completion of a two-year machine tool technology program and 4 years’ toolroom machinist experience. Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
• Demonstrated knowledge in the development and design process of 3D CAD model parts, drawings and assemblies
• Demonstrated knowledge of the properties of materials
• Evidence of being able to perform advanced level machining operations with minimal supervision, including but not limited to, 4th axis and 5th axis CNC, compound and indexing add-ons for machine tools

Working Environment

• Activities are primarily performed in an environmentally controlled machine shop lab setting.
• Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential duties and use office equipment including a desktop computer.
• The occasional campus assignments may entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic and shop equipment in and around research labs and projects.
• Working on site and other campus locations in research laboratories may require working in confined, dusty, oily and poorly lighted areas and may be exposed to hazardous chemicals and dangerous equipment, materials and/or tools which will require safety precautions and/or specific processes to be followed along with required PPE(e.g. gloves, hearing protection, safety glasses, etc.).
• Required to sit or stand for majority of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.
• Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling including heavy weights such as vises and large plates.
• Regular use of standard machine shop equipment including, but not limited too; CNC and manual milling machines, large machining centers, CNC and manual lathes, grinders and high-powered hand tools which produce metal chips and shavings.
