Northern Engineering has been serving the mechanical power transmission rebuilding and machine shop needs of the Great Lakes vessel operators and other large material handling customers for over 100 years, our business is growing. We have an opening on our team for a Machinist. Our staff must be available to work when needed, 24/7 to meet the needs of our customers. Our customers count on us to minimize their down-time for critical systems and keep coming back because of the high level of service they receive from us. We offer a combination of in-shop and in-place repair options.
Your day as a Machinist
As a Machinist at Northern Engineering, you will play a critical role in maintaining a safe work environment while setting up and operating manual, CNC mills, lathes and mobile machining equipment. Your responsibilities will include fabricating, modifying, and repairing machine components according to specifications derived from blueprints. You'll create replacement parts from worn samples and perform mechanical repairs on pumps, gearboxes, shafts, and pulleys, ensuring optimal functionality. Regular tasks will involve cleaning and lubricating machinery, dismantling equipment for thorough inspections, and executing preventive maintenance to troubleshoot and address malfunctions.
You'll maintain continuity across shifts by documenting actions and communicating needs while collaborating with various industries. This position requires travel and the ability to work overtime, including weekends and holidays, as part of our 24/7 operation focused on delivering excellence in repairs.
What we're looking for in a Machinist
To excel as a Machinist at Northern Engineering, candidates must possess a strong foundation in standard practices within manufacturing environments. Effective problem-solving skills are essential, especially when working under limited supervision. A keen attention to detail and an alert mindset ensure safety throughout the job. Applicants should have the ability to read and comprehend labels, safety warnings, and guidelines, alongside excellent communication skills to collaborate with co-workers and supervisors. The ideal candidate can follow directions and procedures under limited supervision while maintaining a positive attitude about the work.
Mechanical aptitude and solid math skills are crucial for accurately interpreting blueprints and measurements. Proficiency in using general hand tools, including grinders, hammers, brooms, tape measures and welders, is also necessary. Prior experience in a similar industry is preferred, along with a high school diploma or GED. Successful candidates must be able to pass a drug screen and background check to be able to obtain a TWIC card, possess a valid driver's license, and be available 24/7 to meet emergency customer needs, which may involve travel.
This position requires grasping, writing, standing, sitting, walking, kneeling, crawling, repetitive motions, bending, climbing, overhead work, listening and hearing ability and visual acuity. Must be able to work in tight, confined spaces, such as accessing manholes. Use of manufacturing equipment. Work in areas at times that are not environmentally controlled. Work in environment where harmful dusts, fogs, fumes, gases, etc. might be present and the use of a respirator may be required. Ability to work in inclement weather conditions. Able to move/lift/pull/push 50 lbs.
