Department Summary:The department is part of the Library's Collection Management & Scholarly Communication division, which also includes Preservation, Scholarly Communication, and the Southern Regional Library Facility. The Library is actively engaged with partners on campus and with other University of California (UC) libraries to provide extensive resources and services to advance information discovery for research, scholarship, and creativity in a dynamically evolving teaching and learning environment.RAMS manages the ordering, receiving, and invoicing activities for seven of the UCLA campus libraries and oversees the transportation of materials between 15 campus locations. The expenditures for tangible and online resources are part of a Library materials budget of approximately $13,000,000.RAMS also functions as the main cataloging unit in the UCLA Library system. It serves the cataloging needs of the Arts, Biomedical, Management, Music, Powell, Science & Engineering, and Young Research Libraries, as well as of eight affiliate libraries on campus. It is primarily responsible for providing access to more than 90,000 new titles annually, including locally-digitized and curated materials, in various formats and languages, using a variety of metadata schemas. The department also creates metadata in support of UCLA's Digital Library Program. Members of the department advise and consult with members of the campus community and others on metadata and cataloging issues, including ethical issues and in support of the Library's Anti-Racism Initiative.Position Summary: Experience with mailroom mechanical equipment sufficient to evaluate and test it properly. (Preferred) Experience with USPS rates and regulations and FedEx, UPS and other common courier practices. (Preferred) Experience with UCLA campus libraries and departments. (Preferred) Physical ability to safely lift, carry and lower objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Ability to safely push loaded hand truck weighing up to 200 pounds, loaded book truck (average weight of 250 pounds) and loaded mail gurneys (average weight of 500 pounds) over various obstacles. (Required) Ability to safely operate a 3-ton delivery vehicle and lift gate, dock leveler and pallet jack in order to make deliveries of library and archival materials to campus library locations and the SRLF. (Required) Ability to distinguish between similarly written names, departments, and addresses and skill in understanding postal terminology, account numbers, and mail codes for correct and accurate sorting and processing of all types of mail. (Required) Skill in explaining policies and conveying information clearly and distinctly to individuals of various backgrounds, using appropriate grammar and vocabulary. (Required) Skill in interacting diplomatically with library staff, campus personnel and outside vendors and maintaining equanimity in the face of resistance, indifference or hostility. (Required) Skill in working independently and following through on assignments. (Required) Ability to perform job duties accurately, efficiently and effectively under conditions of fluctuating workload and priorities. Ability to listen, understand and follow through on both oral and written instructions and assignments and directions. (Required) Basic skill in operating a computer and accurately typing with moderate speed in order to communicate with staff via email and to prepare written documentation, statistics and reports using MS Word and Excel. Under the direction of the LibEx Operations Supervisor, the Mail Processor assists in the transport of library mail, books, serials, and other materials to and from the campus libraries and the SRLF; assists in receiving, sorting and processing of materials at the Library Express (LibEx) mailroom in RAMS, located in the Life Sciences Building. Major duties include receiving, sorting, and delivering incoming mail shipments, operating a University vehicle to transport mail between campus departments and libraries, and sorting incoming campus and library mail and packages. Assists with special projects, assignments and pickups as needed.
