Maintenance Mechanic - Full Time
La Rabida Children’s Hospital is hiring a full-time, 40 hours per week, Maintenance Mechanic for the Plant Operations department in Chicago, IL.
The hours will be two 12 hour shifts on Saturday and Sunday from 6:30pm - 7:00am, and two 8 hour shifts, Wednesday and Thursday from 6:30am - 3:00pm. There is also potential that the shift may vary on occasion to cover PTO.

Job Summary:
A licensed or accredited professional who provides 24-hour services, in and around the hospital. Installs, maintains, and operates hospital systems, and insures reliable utilities. Facilities mechanical pneumatic and electrical repairs and or/other types of repairs relating to maintenance of the physical structure of the hospital.
Essential Maintenance Mechanic Functions:
- Maintains and installs various types of equipment, structures and components.
- Inspects, services and operates various systems and their components.
- Erects scaffolding and simple rigging as required.
- Makes effective use of new and salvaged materials.
- Operates machine tools, hand tools and other tools of the trade.
- Performs routine mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, plumbing and carpentry repairs both inside and outside of the hospital.
- May be required to do painting and other types of surface refinishing on walls, ceilings, floors, furnishings, etc. inside and outside of the building.
- Operates and maintains heating, cooling and refrigeration equipment.
- Operates and maintains auxiliary equipment.
- Analyses boiler water chemistry and adjusts chemical levels as required.
- Maintains operating logbook.
- In the absence of Plant Operations Management, acts in accordance with established departmental guidelines and assumes responsibility, advising at the earliest point of actions taken under this assumption of authority.
- Checking lighting and replacing bulbs and ballasts, maintaining small engines, clearing toilets and drain lines, bed and crib repair, clean and repair traps and strainers, repairs and services fans, maintains electrical appliances, lubricating equipment, replacing filters, checking pump and motor operation, repairing doors and closers, replacing fuses, and resetting circuit breakers, generator and transfer switch testing.
- Communicates work related activities, supply requirements, problems, code violations, and insufficiencies to supervision.
- Complies with established policies, procedures, regulations of the hospital and the department and with federal, state and local building codes.
- Complies with strict occupational safety, infection control and general safety regulations in the performance of duties and use of chemicals.
- Attends meetings as required such as in-service meetings, staff meetings, etc.
- Keeps up-to-date in the field of institutional maintenance through current literature, attendance at workshops, etc. as directed by supervisor.
- Sees that all equipment used in day's work is cleaned and stored properly after work is performed or is at least kept out of traffic lanes if the work extends over a period of time.
- Works to achieve departmental and hospital goals.
- Maintains good public relations and interpersonal skills.
- Ensures equipment used during a day's work is cleaned and properly stored.
- Completes "Daily Activity Sheet" and other required paperwork.
- Assists in keeping areas controlled by Plant Operations Clean
- Assists in keeping walkways clear and free of hazards
- Receives written requisitions and preventative maintenance tasks
- Responds to telephone calls and follows required actions with appropriate documentation
- Organizes work and gives priority to emergency repair
- Reports equipment malfunctions to supervision and responds with appropriate action
- All other duties assigned
What we need from you:
- Education: High School Diploma or equivalent preferred
- Related Work Experience: 2 Years hospital experience in maintenance/engineering
- Licensure/Certification: Class II C.F.C. Certification preferred
- Specialized Knowledge and Skills: A.T.C. System experience preferred
- Able to complete work orders via CMMS (computerized maintenance management system).
