Covenant House CA (CHC) is excited to announce the launch of its new transitional housing site in Santa Clara, CA, for youth experiencing homelessness. Made possible by a unique public/private partnership, Covenant House will open the site in mid-December 2020. The staff at CHC Santa Clara will be part of a unique experience of being the first staff to ever work at the site, not only becoming a critical part of CHC’s history, but helping to develop a program that most effectively meets the needs of youth experiencing homelessness in the Santa Clara Valley. The staff will draw upon CHC’s 30+ years of experience serving youth, ages 18-24, while developing unique programming and services to meet the unique needs of youth in the SC Valley. The Maintenance Tech is responsible for performing highly diversified duties to install, troubleshoot, repair for the Santa Clara location. The Maintenance Tech will ensure compliance according to safety, livable conditions and processes to support the achievement of Covenant House California’s mission, principles and values.
SALARY RANGE: $30 / hour
Part-Time: 8 hours a week
Essential Functions.
- Perform highly diversified duties to install, fix and maintain the physical and aesthetic aspects of each of the Santa Clara site.
- Provide emergency/unscheduled repairs of all of the aspects of the facility and grounds, as well as performing scheduled maintenance repairs.
- Perform weekly facility walk-throughs at each site and complete checklist to be reviewed by supervisor to identify any potential risks or areas that need to be fixed or repaired or replaced. It important for the facility walk through to be shared with the site supervisor as well.
- Perform simple maintenance duties and responsibilities.
- Read and interpret equipment manuals and work orders to perform required maintenance and service.
- Diagnose problems, replace or repair parts, test and make adjustments.
- Perform a variety of plumbing maintenance and carpentry functions. It should be noted that the position is not required to be an ‘expert’ in all types of repairs and that whenever a job is beyond the scope of technician’s training or experience, it is the Maintenance Tech’s responsibility to inform management that an outside vendor should be called to complete the job. This is to ensure safety of technician, our sites and property.
- Use a variety of hand and power tools, electric meters and material handling equipment in performing duties.
- Detect faulty operations, defective material and report those and any unusual situations to proper supervision.
- Comply with safety regulations and maintain clean and orderly work areas.
- Other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
EDUCATION: High School diploma or equivalent.
EXPERIENCE: 2+ years basic building maintenance experience.
SKILLS: Must have good basic maintenance skills. Must be able to juggle multiple tasks and prioritize well. Must be able to communicate effectively with site leadership, and must also have basic computer skills. Must have a good driving record for use of agency vehicles.
TRANSPORTATION / TRAVEL: Employee can drive own vehicle and turn in mileage on a weekly or monthly basis for reimbursement. Employee may also use the agency vehicles as available.
WORKING CONDITIONS: General business/office environment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing for significant periods of time. The employee must frequently lift and/or move items up to 75 pounds or more. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to various products and tools that fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud.
EQUIPMENT USED: Must be able to safely operate a variety of power tools and maintenance equipment. Must also be able to use computers, calculators, fax machines, telephone and other equipment required.
