Qualifications:Position Summary
Responsible for managing the daily operations of the Gray Civil Engineering group including reviews and evaluations, leadership, supervision, and providing guidance to the civil engineering group, outside consultants and our customers. Must demonstrate a thorough knowledge of current engineering principles and practices. Accountable for the group's performance and design approach concerning procedures, content, quality, completeness, accuracy, and timely submittal of environmental permitting, site improvement plans, record plats, development plans, technical specifications, cost estimates, erosion and sediment control plans, and stormwater drainage analyses for large industrial and commercial projects. Coordinates site design with and provides direction to the Project, Design, and Site Managers along with Marketing and Business Development personnel. Often asked to participate in and/or lead project meetings and presentations. Will be directly responsible for the Civil Engineer of Record on projects done in-house and will be the Engineer of Record on most projects. Provides guidance and direction to outsourced Civil Consultants when Gray's Civil Group is at full capacity.
Periodically reviews operational procedures to ensure compliance with policies and performance measures. Also keeps informed of new methods and developments affecting the Civil Group’s areas of expertise and responsibility. Will require travel for site visits during proposal, construction and site analysis activities.
Who we want… (Requirements)
Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, current, active Professional Engineer license, and a minimum ten years related experience. LEED AP preferred, but not required.
Must be able to respond to job site conflicts in a timely manner. Wearing of hardhat, safety
glasses, ear protection, gloves, and work boots is required on a job site. Must have the ability to communicate clearly with the Customer, Project Team Members, governing agency personnel, sub-contractors, other consultants (Geotechnical, Land Surveyor, Environmental, Landscape Architect, etc.), and Company Field Personnel.
Must be physically present in the Lexington office.
Language Skills
Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical publications or government regulations. Ability to write reports and business correspondence; ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from team members, managers, clients, customers and the general public.
Computer Skills
Must be proficient using AutoCAD 3D and associated Civil Engineering Design software, stormwater modeling software, calculating earthwork quantities, establishing plan and profiles for roadways and pipelines, determining amounts of pavement, pipe, drainage structures, erosion control measures, rock, open channels, fencing, etc. Ability to use and produce documents with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Adobe (Bluebeam) is required.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in a limited amount of time. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or other forms. Ability to quickly and efficiently evaluate crucial issues and/or unique conditions, apply design alternatives, and make an informed, cost effective, constructible decision to resolve the situation while understanding the impact and risk involved. Use of creativity, foresight, and mature judgment required when anticipating and solving unprecedented problems.

What we expect… (Essential Functions)
Routinely interacts and confers with customers, contractors, reviewing agencies, engineering personnel, and architects on projects.
Manages the compilation and the analysis of data relating to a site's geographic location, topography, highway and rail access, available utilities, soil types, subsurface conditions, environmental status, drainage, local zoning and development regulations, restrictions and covenants, and other requirements that would affect the cost, constructability, and scheduling of a project.
Oversees preparation of site improvement plans, specifications, drainage reports, and cost estimates for land development, ensuring compliance with Customer RFP and coordination with Project and Design Managers concerning scope of work, quantities, and scheduling.
Periodically inspects construction work in progress to support Field Personnel, to ensure compliance with the approved contract documents, to approve quality of materials and work, and to discuss and consider alternates to the approved design that could better fit existing conditions.
Assist with site analysis requiring travel to investigate sites and meet with local governing agencies having jurisdiction. Other duties may be assigned.

Specific vision abilities include accurate near and distant vision.
Frequently in a normal office environment where noise level is moderate and temperature/humidity is controlled. Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, and outside weather conditions. May be exposed to high, precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, extreme cold and/or heat, risk of electrical shock, explosives and vibrations. Noise level on the job site is normally moderate to loud. Overtime may be required. Overnight travel will be required.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Directly responsible for the Civil Group’s performance, quality of work, due diligence during code research, ability to meet schedules and deadlines, and assignment of projects to personnel within the Group. Also responsible for evaluations, hiring, interviewing, presentations in front of the Customers, and executing contracts with Professional Consultants (Geotechnical, Civil, Land Surveyors, etc).
