About the Job
The Manager of Environmental Sustainability and Safety Compliance is responsible for establishing, implementing, and maintaining comprehensive environmental health and safety (EHS) and sustainability and compliance programs for the University. This position manages numerous compliance related programs in the areas of environmental health and safety while simultaneously promoting sustainability initiatives across the campus.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Sustainability:
- Assists in the evaluation, identification, and implementation of campus sustainability initiatives in partnership with the Laudato Si' Implementation Committee on Sustainability and the campus facilities
- Works collaboratively with the Laudato Si' Implementation Committee on Sustainability initiatives while also working within the practical realities of facilities operations
- Establishes and maintains enterprise tools to monitor, assess, and communicate performance, sustainability and compliance metrics. (AASHE sustainability tracking tool (STARS), et al.)
- Develops a baseline for campus's sustainability-based consumption or generation metrics to serve as a basis for sustainability initiatives. Develops and maintains systems to record trends in these metrics
- Expands and enhances campus recycling efforts while working with campus offices to strengthen partnerships that enhance environmental awareness.
- Identifies synergies that help to capitalize on sustainability matters that reduce campus operating expenses
- Prepares reports that clearly outline and communicate the campus baselines, highlight campus environmental program successes, and that facilitate grant proposal applications/submissions
- Researches and analyzes sustainability opportunities and practices to educate various decision-makers; serves as a resource for environmental and sustainability best practices
- Maintains all Environmental and Sustainability regulatory documentation
- Serves as a member of the Laudato Si' Implementation Committee on Sustainability
Compliance:
- Conducts risk management assessments and safety educational programs; provides a risk management perspective on institutional initiatives and situations; and complying with the risk management standards of federal, state and local regulatory agencies with the objective of promoting safety in areas of required environmental health and safety.
- Performs internal assessments for EHS programs, identifies corrective actions/solutions, and executes action to address issues identified
- Performs compliance inspections and audits; updates policies, programs, and procedures to ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal laws and regulations
- Maintains all EHS documentation for the university and ensures all reporting is in compliance
- Maintains a current understanding of trends within Environmental Health and Safety
- Responds to any EHS related issues that may arise at the university
- Works with other campus offices and departments to ensure that waste streams are properly adhered to and documented
- Provides the development, training, implementation, and management of shop policies and procedures that realize the full potential of the resources of the university
- Performs other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, or Business from an accredited college or university preferred
- Demonstrable experience working in a regulated industry with some project management experience; willingness to gain a functional knowledge of federal and state regulations and codes; capable of conducting SWOT analysis with a balanced emphasis on strategic and tactical objectives
- Professional Certifications in Engineering, Risk Management or Sustainability, preferred
- Experience in assessment, policy development and analysis with a particular emphasis on a regulatory focus in areas of environmental health and safety; willingness to gain certifications though the job in OSHA, asbestos and other areas of environmental compliance/safety/sustainability.
- Must clear and maintain a favorable background investigation and clearance
- Must have valid driver's license, motor vehicle liability insurance and personal injury insurance; or have a self-reliant source of transportation to conduct business daily
- Must have the ability to demonstrate intermediate knowledge of MS Office/Office 365 (Word, Teams, Power Point, Publisher, Outlook), experience with virtual meeting platforms (Zoom, Teams, or similar); capable of learning software programs including the AASHE STAR's assessment.
- Must be able to be flexible and able to work off-campus, weekends, and evenings, as required
- Must be able to work more than 40 hours during the workweek.
- Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills; strong public relations and customer service skills with an ability to implement diplomacy and discretion at all times; ability to work effectively with communities across the university.
- Must have high ethical standards and a strong sense of confidentiality; ability to prioritize and manage multiple deadlines; thrive in a complex work environment; display solid problem solving and interpersonal skills; work well independently and as part of a team.
- Must have a high attention to detail and be able to use analytics, organize workflow, coordinate activities, balance simultaneous projects without loss of efficiency in a multi-tasked environment and manage multiple priorities to meet deadlines.
- Ability to stay abreast on all matters and activities of the University in order to effectively articulate and incorporate relevant information in University Advancement mediums.
- Ability to think independently and take initiative to plan and implement effective partnerships and relationships to find new and sustain existing sponsorships from a variety of constituents.
- Understanding of the St. Mary's culture and ability to represent and communicate the university mission to prospective students and families is preferred.
- Bilingual Preferred (English/Spanish with the ability to understand and to make one's self understood to Spanish speaking individuals).
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Working conditions are in an office environment and university campus setting. Must be able to move across the university campus to conduct day to day business. Employee will work in an office environment but may be exposed to various temperature conditions and noise levels ranges
- While performing this role, the employee will be regularly required to sit, walk, and stand; talk and hear, both in person and by telephone; and be able to lift up to 25 pounds
- May work outside and inside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, insects, dust, toxic chemicals and fumes, noise, vibration, and electrical hazards; workaround gas lines; work around machinery with moving parts; may work in tight or enclosed spaces; may work alone; may work irregular hours
- Must have the ability to perform duties outdoors in various weather conditions such as, rain, cold/hot days if necessary
- Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Frequently communicates with others using approved technological resources; must be able to exchange accurate information through designated systems within a timely manner
- Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery
