The Manager Pathology is responsible for multi-site laboratory quality assurance, proficiency testing, evaluation and implementation of new procedures, equipment, staffing and computer functionality in compliance with accrediting agencies. The Manager will actively integrate the Pathology functions inclusive of specimen management, gross sectioning, histology, cytology, flow cytometry, clerical and Pathologist Professional diagnosis. Participates in Pathologist Peer Review activities. The Manager is responsible for decedent affairs specifically related to multi-site morgue activities and associated regulatory requirements. |

Responsibilities:
Creates and ensures an environment conducive to strong employee engagement and positive employee retention through effective team building, communication, employee feedback, and engagement of employees in departmental decisions. Employee engagement meets targeted scores. Develops, implements and monitors operating and capital budgets to ensure laboratory service is cost effective and delivers quality results. Cost per procedure is at or below budgeted cost. Uses organizational benchmarking tools to measure performance and productivity to meet designated standards. Accountable for the direction and monitoring of the overall operation of the laboratory activities and staff to ensure quality, production and accreditation standards are met consistently. Rounds in the department and with staff on a routine basis. Accountable for the performance of quality control,maintenance procedures,turnaround times and quality assurance activities to maintain effective operation of test systems. Develops and ensures the implementation and monitoring of quality process improvements. Provides guidance and assistance to staff on procedures, troubleshooting and problem solving. Ensures training of new staff. Ensures retraining of staff as needed. Ensures staff competency for designated test systems completed annually by due date. Accountable for educating and enforcing the policies relating to the appropriate handling,testing,resulting,investigation, corrective action and records for proficiency testing (PT) required by accrediting agencies. Accountable for human resource and payroll functions including staffing plans, performance evaluations, coaching/counseling, and payroll timekeeping. Ensures policies and procedures are followed by staff. Actively participates in the financial management of the site or department. Provides input to the director for the necessary financial operations of budgeting,evaluating,monitoring,and implementing corrective action. Utilizes labor management tools effectively. Reviews processes to improve efficiency and reduce costs. Implements inventory control system. Actively works to achieve the departmental and organizational financial goals. Ensures compliance with all regulatory standards (CUA,CAP, TJC, FDA,MBB). Maintains current knowledge of regulatory standards in relation to the scope of testing. Active participant in accreditation surveys. Ensures staff adherence with all regulatory,safety,and corporate compliance requirements. Evaluates instrumentation and procedures to maintain and/or improve patient outcomes. Develops and implements process changes and ensures that departmental and organizational goals are met or exceeded. Evaluates laboratory vendors and contracts for supplies and instrumentation to maintain state of the art quality outcomes. Ensures appropriate inventory system. Serves as liaison to clinicians,nursing,administration,other hospital departments and clients. Communicates and collaborates effectively in multi-disciplinary committees, task forces, and breakthrough groups to improve processes and services. Performs other duties as assigned. |
EDUCATION: |
Required: Bachelor's degree in medical technology, clinical laboratory science, or chemical, physical, or medical laboratory science. Bachelor's degree diploma must be provided OR Bachelor's degree in chemical, physical, or biological science with a minimum of 60 semester hours specifically including, 6 hours chemistry, 6 hours of biology and 12 additional hours in any combination of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology. Transcript with degree indicated must be provided and evaluated by laboratory leadership prior to offer. |
EXPERIENCE: |
Required: Five years of experience in a high complexity laboratory. Two years experience in a leadership (management) position. |
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRY/LISTING: |
Required: ASCP (American Society of Clinical Pathologists) certification or equivalent certification by: NCA (National Certification Agency), AMT (American Medical Technologist), HEW (Health, Education, and Welfare) |
