The base salary range for this position is dependent upon experience and
location, ranging from $122,699- $168,711
Job Summary
The Manager of the Protection & Relaying department has the responsibly
of ensuring proper operation, design, standards and maintenance of all
substation protection and relaying schemes at AVANGRID and it's owned
subsidiaries: CMP (Central Maine Power), NYSEG (New York State Electric
& Gas), Rochester Gas & Electric (RG&E), The United Illuminating Company
(UI), etc.. AVANGRID's electric delivery system has approximately 9,000
miles of transmission lines and 1,000 substations.
This person will lead an internal department of supervisors, engineers
and external contractors. The Manager of Protection & Relaying will
report directly to AVANGRID's Director of Protection & Control. The
Manager will set policies, procedures, document standards and oversee
engineering activities for electric transmission and substation system
protection to ensure safe, timely and efficient system operation. The
Manager will coordinate with other departments, vendors, and consultants
in order to complete projects in a timely and cost-effective manner.
They will act as an advisor to upper management and an external
representative to AVANGRID.
Ensure all protection and control system designs meet applicable
company, local, state, and national codes and standards (NESC, FERC,
NERC, NPCC, NYISO, ISO-NE, NY PSC, ME PUC, CT PUC, etc.).
Responsibilities
Advisor to upper management. Responsible for meeting, executing and
reporting on all NERC PRC standards and associated NPCC, ISO-NE and
ISO-NY standards. Personal Management, Process Management and Project
Management. Management of department budgets for each operating company.
Design and maintain devices interfacing substation relaying to SCADA
system and Energy Control Center. Maintenance of contracts with
engineering firms and hardware manufactures. Engineering design,
estimating, and analysis of the electric transmission and substation
protection systems in support of the capital construction programs.
Engineering calculations and analysis. Review and approve detailed
protection system designs, including settings, developed both internally
and by engineering consultants. Development of technical specifications,
standards, contracts and purchase orders. Ensure efficient use of funds.
Serve as mentor in the technical development of engineers and
cross-department employees. Design and maintenance of distribution
protection systems existing outside of substations. Review of large
customer interconnections and distributed energy resource
interconnections to substations, transmission circuits and distribution
circuits. Represent the company on regional and national committees.
Travel on an as needed basis.

Technical Skills/Competencies
- Theoretical Engineering knowledge - Planning, Operations and

- Practical engineering experience/application - Planning, Operations
and Engineering Design, Construction, (e.g. field experience,

- Engineering documentation - Ability to adequately docu ent and
interpret engineering documentation
- Ability to review and approve engineering work done by others to
ensure compliance with company standards, specifications, and
contract requirements
- Knowledge of Regulatory and Compliance Environment - Local, State
and Federal Regulatory Standards and requirements
- Networking, Computer Security, and Databases - Understanding
Networking, security, computer hardware, software applications,
database structure, and data communication equipment.
Functional/job/business specific Competencies:

- Strong Electrical Design Experience
- Proficiency and fluency in power system protection theory,
applications, standards, designs, testing, commissioning, and
analysis
Education & Experience Required:
Required Qualifications:
8 years of experience in engineering with a minimum of 5 years of
experience in substation & transmission Protection
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering / Technology
Advanced knowledge of power system analysis and fundamentals of
equipment protection
Experience with power system protection applications such as ASPEN
OneLiner, ASPEN Line Database
