TITLE:  Marketing Student Intern

LOCATION: Central Officeand Training Center

The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 22,000 students and 60+ different languages are spoken in the homes of our students. KCKPS is home to Sumner Academy, the #6 highest rated High School in the Nation and #1 High School in Kansas according to the US News rankings.

With Head Start/preschools, 28 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, and 5 college and career academies/high schools, we are the fifth largest district in the state of Kansas and our student population is approximately 56% Hispanic, 24% African American, 9% White, and 6% Asian. To serve our students, the district employs approximately 4,000 employees including more than 1,800 teachers.              

JOB GOAL:The Marketing Student Intern works as part of the Diploma+ College & Career Instructional Programs Team to enhance Kansas City, Kansas Public School’s image and support its vision of becoming one of the top 10 school districts in the nation. The student interns will work closely with the Diploma+ team to plan and implement marketing campaigns for the Diploma+ department. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

• Brainstorm and develop ideas for creative marketing campaigns for district programs and services. 

• Collaborate with communications team members to coordinate brand awareness and marketing efforts. 
• Co-coordinate the department's “social media” sites, including Facebook, X, Instagram, and YouTube. 
• Ensure creative marketing materials undergo regular review and adhere to brand guidelines. 
• Co-coordinate internal and external electronic newsletters. 

• Contributes stories, as requested, for staff communications tools, including the Education Connection, Staff Notebook, etc. 
• Plan and execute initiatives to reach the target audience through appropriate channels (radio, billboards, social media, print advertising) 
• Prepare marketing materials for the Diploma+ staff before publication, as needed. 
• Possesses basic design skills and the ability to conceptualize, develop and produce designs that are reflective of the district brand standards. Products may include, but are not limited to, fliers, advertisements, postcards, invitations, banners, brochures and other communications resources as needed. 

• Support and collaborate with the Communications Team members, as needed, to complete departmental initiatives. 
• Assist in the development of videotaping assignments, as assigned. 
• Complete other duties as assigned 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

• Strong oral and written communication skills. 
• Video and editing skills. 
• Social Media experience. 
• Experience with writing newsletters, marketing campaigns, advertising copy. 
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office software including Excel, PowerPoint and Word. 

COMMUNICATION / ORGANIZATION:Maintains communication with internal and external stakeholders such as Board of Education, Educational Agencies, Federal/State/Local agencies, teachers, other school personnel, parents/guardians, businesses, and community to enhance cooperative action which will meet the educational needs of students. Compiles data for statistical purposes. Maintains confidentiality regarding district records. Ability to speak clear and concisely in written or oral communication. Includes giving instructions, assignments, or directions to subordinates or assistants as needed to carry out duties. 

REASONING ABILITY:Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or composite characteristics of data, people, or things.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:120 hours for the 2024-2025 SY 

SALARY:  $15.00 /hour

FLSA STATUS:  Exempt 

REPORT TO:  Director of Diploma+ College & Careers Instructional Programs

EVALUATION:  Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with the district policies.
