Role: Maternity Coverage - Learning Support Teacher in Kindergarten and Grade 1

JOB PURPOSE
The Learning Support Teacher works with students in Kindergarten and Grade 1 in either a push in or pull out setting, depending on the needs of identified students. We use the Response to Intervention (RTI) model. The teacher will provide a safe, inclusive educational experience that enables students to develop academic and affective skills. They will provide impactful, small group teaching and help embed inclusive teaching and learning practices throughout the school. The Learning Support Teacher will contribute to the Student Support Team.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Work one-on-one or with small groups of learners, developing their skills (usually in literacy or math).
- Work with teachers to ensure they can implement successful learning strategies for the students in their class.
- Keep up-to-date records of communication and make entries in confidential files so support can be tracked and monitored.
- Keep the Learning Support Coordinator, the child’s teachers and the leadership team informed about students’ progress, interventions, accommodations and collaboration.
- Develop relationships with students that support a restorative practices approach to building community and fostering a sense of belonging.
- Safeguard students by monitoring their physical and social-emotional safety in partnership with parents, administrators and school counselors.
- Build partnerships with students, parents, teachers and colleagues to support the culture of “we.”
- Create a safe place of learning which is intentionally inclusive where all voices are seen, heard and valued.
- Communicate regularly with the families of children with whom they are working directly.
Ideal candidates will have experience with a range of pedagogical approaches and will be excited by the opportunity to teach a diverse student body in an inquisitive and inquiry-based environment with integrity. The ideal candidate has demonstrated effective equitable and inclusive practices within and outside the classroom. A passion for teaching, flexible attitude, commitment to lifelong learning, and a sense of humor are essential.
REQUIREMENTS
- A relevant Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
- 3 years experience as a Learning Support teacher
- A strong literacy and/or math intervention background
- Successful experience in an inquiry/trans-disciplinary or IB PYP environment is preferred, but good applicants with other curriculum experience are also welcome to apply.
- Enthusiastic about teaching within a multicultural and multilingual environment. Flexibility of approach and a collaborative style are essential.
- A commitment to equity and inclusion, inquiry, and experiential based pedagogy is essential alongside a willingness to adapt and develop pedagogy to meet the needs of our learners.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, communication, and collaborative skills.
- An understanding of the principles of second language acquisition as related to learning differences.
