JobSummary:The Math Tutor at C.S. 213 The New Lots School develops connections with students and meets with them individually as well as in groups for tutoring to support Math includingin-person and remote sessions. The Tutor also creates learning and study materials for NYS Test prep.
Reports to: Program Director – Community School, P.S. 213
Location: 580 Hegeman Ave, Brooklyn NY 11207
Hours: 12-16 Hours/Week; Non-Exempt (September - May)
Schedule: Monday – Thursday 9:00 am – 1:00pm
Salary: $16.15 to $23.15 an hour
Major Duties:
- Build and maintain meaningful relationships with teachers and students.
- Take initiative and work independently in the school setting, reaching out to teachers and students and arranging tutoring sessions for identified students.
- Help create and support an environment of academic support during in-school and recess break programming that is conducive to effective learning, including designing and using creative, out-of-the-box educational activities and that promote engagement.
- Liaise and meet with school faculty regarding classroom work and assignments, as well as individual student needs.
- Observe classes in order to understand what assignments are given, to observe teacher styles as well as student participation and learning.
- Organize and implement NYS Math Test preparation and support during school day, and remotely during school recesses and breaks.
- Review and stay up to date with classroom and NYS Math Test curricula topics and assignments and work with students to help them understand the key concepts.
- Conduct practice tests and assessments to track student progress, identify areas of improvement and help set goals for test preparation
- Contribute to planning and actualizing of long-term and short-term objectives for the tutoring program in conjunction with the Program Director.
- Partner with school guidance counselors and teachers as well as parents to create a comprehensive plan for students who are struggling academically.
- Develop and distribute teaching materials, assignments and study guides that recognize the individual learning goals for students.
- Tailor learning opportunities to a youth-development approach.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Experience tutoring students Math
- Experience with high school adolescents
- Effective instructional techniques and excellent communication skills.
- Knowledge of the needs of students requiring remedial reading instruction.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with afterschool program staff, school colleagues, school administrators, parents and students.
- A commitment to work from a strength-based, youth and family development and trauma-informed perspective.
- Candidates with the following experience are encouraged to apply:
