Job Summary
The welder fabricator has to lay out and fabricate metal assemblies and weldments and be familiar with structural welding, forming and various other fabrication processes. In addition this position is accountable for the timely installation, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of complex plant equipment and facilities that are instrumental in the efficient functioning of automated production lines and a manufacturing facility operating on a 24 hour/day, 7 day/week operation.
All assignments must be carried out under stringent safety and sanitation standards. Quality requirements are constantly monitored, necessitating equipment fabrication and machine operations within specific tolerances and operational specifications to insure the delivery of food products on time and at the lowest cost by conforming exactly to the customer's requirements. Participation of employees in the implementation of improved concepts is encouraged in all production processes.
Skills required include an advanced journey level proficiency in welding, fabricating design, reading running lathes and milling machines, fabricating and repairing pneumatic and hydraulic systems. Additionally, the incumbent must own and maintain a basic set of hand tools.
Principle Accountabilities
- Troubleshoot and perform repairs to equipment that has failed in a manner that minimizes downtime.
- During process line downtime, schedule and perform preventative maintenance and equipment repairs
- Fabricate, manufacture or assemble items as indicated on blue prints, sketches or schematics of complex objects and circuitry as requested in work orders. Knowledge of the properties and characteristics of metals used for cutting, welding and forming objects and of various welding fluxes and rods.
- Maintain an appropriate inventory of parts on hand to facilitate timely repair of equipment.
- Maintain an up-to-date understanding of the proper use of all repair equipment through an on-going training schedule.
- Although assigned to a specialized job, the incumbent will be expected to assist in areas outside of that specialty as the need arises.
- Understand safety regulations and procedures on all assignments.
This position requires the incumbent to have advanced skills as an industrial mechanic. Special skills required are:
- Basic mathematics skills
- Basic knowledge of welding symbols and blueprint reading skills.
- Ability to work with complicated welding tools like ox-fuel, plasma, mag-drills, chainsaws etc.
- Cutting and joining metal parts for fabricating or repairing vehicle equipment, furniture, tools and various other articles, applying tools like mig-welder, plasma cutter, arc welder, chop saw, oxyacetylene torch etc.
- Designing and fabricating the equipment and parts for meeting the special or unusual needs, using the manufacturer specifications, calculator, measuring devices, drawings etc.
- Installing or removing any special equipment like paint machine, grinder, power and hand tools etc.
- Designing and creating holding jigs that aid in fabrication of the parts in various numbers.
- Maintaining a record of all the work completed so as to facilitate the accounting activities.
- Maintaining routine inventory supplies that are used for operating the welding unit via inspection of stocks and ordering fresh stock as and when required.
