Position Summary
This is a full-time on-site role for a Vehicle Mechanic in Detroit. The Vehicle Maintenance Technician will be responsible for performing routine electrical and mechanical maintenance, identifying and diagnosing mechanical issues, and repairing or replacing damaged parts in rail transit vehicles, including diagnostics, troubleshooting, and corrective action in both scheduled and unscheduled formats. The Vehicle Maintenance Technician will also be responsible for record-keeping, ordering parts and supplies, and ensuring compliance with all safety regulations.

The Vehicle Maintenance Technician will also be responsible for record-keeping, ordering parts and supplies, and ensuring compliance with all safety regulations.
Key Functions & Responsibilities of the Mechanic - Vehicle
- Investigate/diagnose and repair electrical and mechanical issues.
- Perform Preventative Maintenance and Inspections.
- Provide emergency repair and service on the alignment.
- Analyze work orders and perform assigned tasks.
- Participate in ongoing training.
- Comply with all safety regulations.
- Properly/accurately complete work orders in a prompt manner
- Prepare and submit shift reports.
- Utilize and maintain required PPE.
- Maintain the work area in a clean and organized manner.
- Must be able to perform all functions of the position, with or without accommodation.
- Other functions as assigned.
- Treat coworkers with respect and professionalism
- Accurately document preventative maintenance tasks
- Ensures that all streetcars and related equipment are maintained following manufacturers recommended specifications.
- Ensures all reports and forms associated with streetcar inspections and repairs are completed and logged, and work orders are completed.
- Operates streetcars on an as-needed basis in the shop and yard facility.
- Follows Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- May serve as the Employee in Charge (EIC)
- Performs hazard analysis for streetcars and related equipment.
- Supports incident, occurrence & accident investigations and is a lead in all those that involve a streetcar.
- All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required Experience, Skills & Abilities of the Mechanic - Vehicle
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics and blueprints.
- Excellent knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems and components
- Good communication and organizational skills
- Strong problem-analysis and problem-resolution skills
- Active listening and learning skills.
- Ability to pass DOT physical.
- Ability to pass DOT drug screen and background check.
- Ability to troubleshoot complex electrical/mechanical issues.
- Ability to work weekends and evenings.
- Ability to work in adverse weather conditions when responding to mechanical issues on the alignment.
- Analyzing problems, identifying alternative solutions, and implementing recommendations.
- Outstanding attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Using computers and related software applications.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Word and Excel.
Education, Licensing, and Certifications Required for the Mechanic - Vehicle
- High School Diploma or GED
- Associate Degree in Electrical field preferred
- Minimum of two years experience in vehicle mechanics
- At least one year of electrical experience is required.
- Valid MI Driver’s License.
- Ability to troubleshoot complex issues on equipment.
- Demonstrated knowledge of diagnostic tools and software
- ASE certification preferred.
- Experience working with rail transit vehicles is a plus.
