Mechanical Engineer – Design Engineering
Responsibilities:
- Develop the scope, technical basis, installation, and testing requirements for engineering design changes, including pumps, valves, piping, heat exchangers, pressure vessels, turbines, HVAC systems, and more.
- Research engineering and design issues, evaluate alternative solutions, and present recommendations to address a variety of challenges.
- Provide ongoing support for assigned engineering design changes through work order reviews, corrective action programs, and field installation activities.
- Create or revise design specifications and technical requirement documents to support engineering design changes.
- Develop or revise complex engineering calculations related to design changes.
- Create safety screens and evaluations that align with engineering design modifications.
- Update site design basis documents, design drawings, and regulatory documents impacted by engineering changes.
The successful candidate will perform engineering work for mechanical projects within the Design Engineering organization. This includes developing design packages for various plant modifications, conceptual designs for bidding purposes, evaluating alternative solutions, and providing technical support during implementation. You will coordinate design efforts with external vendors and review design packages prepared by other engineers.
Qualified individuals will be expected to act independently as a Responsible Engineer for developing modification packages, calculations, and specifications for our client. Previous qualifications and experience from other utilities may be considered. Experience as a Modification Engineer, Calculation Preparer, or Design Verifier at a nuclear utility, particularly with knowledge of Passport, Consolidated Asset Suite (CAS), or Nuclear Asset Suite (NAS), is highly desirable. Experience in Operations is also a plus.
As the Lead Technical and/or Responsible Engineer for assigned projects, you will provide support for projects led by other disciplines, such as Electrical, Civil/Structural, and Instrumentation & Control (I&C). Sound technical judgment and guidance to engineering, planning, and implementation teams throughout the lifecycle of plant modification packages are essential.

- Installation of Reactor Feed Pump Turbine Lube Oil Sump Vapor Extractor
- Motor Operated Valve Replacements
- Emergency Diesel Generator Overspeed Trip Modification
- Standby Liquid Control Valve Upgrades
- Halon System Replacement
- Main Steam Isolation Valve Upgrades
- And more!
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) or equivalent with relevant work experience
- 15+ years of engineering experience in the nuclear industry, specifically in design modification package preparation
- Ability to obtain and maintain unescorted access to a nuclear facility, including General Employee Training, Radiation Worker Training, Security Clearance checks, and compliance with the site's Fitness for Duty Program
- Strong oral and written communication skills within a professional environment
- Proven ability to research engineering and design issues, evaluate alternatives, and present sound recommendations to a project team
- Must be able to work collaboratively in a team environment
Preferred Qualifications:
- Registration/Licensure as a Professional Engineer
- Engineering experience at the Brunswick Nuclear Plant
- Familiarity with 10CFR50.59 regarding modifications to nuclear facilities
- Experience with standard design processes in the nuclear industry
