GENERAL PURPOSE OF THIS JOB (Summary)
The Mechanical Engineer provides safe, "Best for Project" solutions for complex projects, while ensuring regulatory compliance for all engineering deliverables. The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for collaborating with other disciplines and team members in developing safe and effective designs. This includes participation in model and drawing reviews and completing calculations, as necessary to ensure that systems will perform as intended. The Mechanical Engineer is expected to have a firm understanding of first principles, a working knowledge of pumping, piping, basic mechanical actuation, hydraulics, pneumatics, and HVAC, and a general knowledge of pertinent codes and standards and their application to the work performed. The Mechanical Engineer will work under the guidance of more senior personnel to follow company workflows and standards and continually improve their technical skills.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
HEALTH AND SAFETY
- Work in compliance with all Health and Safety rules and regulations for Cementation
- Be aware of any health and safety hazards or infractions and report same to Health and Safety Department
- Ensure all applicable safety codes and regulations are met by appropriate design and use of technology
- Be a champion for safety, advocating safe behaviour while incorporating safety into the designs produced by the group
GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This description lists the core responsibilities and duties of the position. Additional duties deemed to be within the incumbent's capabilities, on an as required basis, might be assigned by management.
- Adhere to Cementation engineering standards
- Collaborate with Designers to establish how drawings will be laid out to ensure that the Engineer's requirements will be adequately conveyed
- Collaborate with Cementation's Project Services and Operations groups to produce "Best for Project" designs that are safe, reflect the client's operability requirements, and are constructible
- Contribute to the maintenance and development of departmental standards as assigned, ensuring conformance with current codes, standards, and mining regulations
- Understand and use Discipline Specific standards include specifications, design basis and criteria templates, design spreadsheets, workflow procedures, change management forms
- Provide technical assistance during tender periods to answer questions, assess vendor packages and make technical recommendations
- Provide technical assistance during the fabrication/manufacturing period, providing procurement with technical information and support to ensure that Client and Project requirements are met
- Actively participate in the development of Engineers-in-Training, providing technical direction, mentorship, general work and calculation overview and approval
- Develop, complete, and file all necessary calculations to ensure compliance with codes, standards, regulations, special industry guidelines, Cementation, and Client standards
- Select Mechanical Equipment and Design Piping systems, developing and completing all necessary calculations to ensure compliance with codes, standards, regulations, special industry guidelines, Cementation, and Client standards
- Participate in Design Reviews, ensuring that regulatory, safety and Client operability requirements are met, and collaborating with Operations to ensure that the design will be built in the safest, most efficient and cost-effective manner possible
- At various project phases, participate in Risk Assessments, identifying and mitigating risks that are deemed to be unacceptable
- At various project phases, complete timely review and mark-up of drawings, ensuring collaboration with other disciplines, project managers, project services and operations, designers and quality group to ensure timely "one time only" reviews. Ensure compliance to Engineering Design calculations, codes, standards, and regulations.
- During construction, assess and provide technical recommendations in response to Field Enquiries
- Ensure that Project Deliverables, such as drawings and specifications reflect As-built information, and that As-built or Record drawings are issued. As necessary, use due diligence and change management principals to complete engineering design checks to ensure that all changes meet regulatory, Cementation, and Client requirements.
- Conduct Quality Assurance shop or on-site reviews of fabricated or constructed work to assure that Quality Control measures have effectively delivered work that complies with regulatory, Cementation, and Client requirements
- Prepare and Issue On-site review reports, complete with observations and recommendations. Follow up as necessary to ensure that recommendations have been satisfactorily addressed.
- Prepare Engineering related project close out documentation, as appropriate for compliance with regulatory, Cementation and Client requirements
- Other duties as assigned
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
- This position has the requirement for occasional travel to project sites, offices, and/or to conduct shop reviews
- Travel period may range from one day to several weeks and may include overseas assignments
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Has no direct reports, however, will oversee, check, and stamp the work of mechanical designers and EITs
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution
- Registered as a Professional Engineer or eligible to become registered within 1 year
- Experience in discipline specific design for underground or heavy industrial infrastructure, piping, or material handling
- Minimum 4 to 8 years of relevant experience

- Nastran or other FEA software
- Bluebeam Revu
- MS Office Suite
