About the Job
This role involves collaborating with the design team to develop accurate mechanical budgets, contributing to departmental growth, and supporting business development through historical data and expertise. The estimator will engage with project owners, engineers, subcontractors, and vendors as needed to ensure project success. Responsibilities include detailed takeoffs, scope gap analysis, subcontractor bid solicitation, proposal preparation, and presenting project scopes in bid reviews.
Requirements
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop mechanical budgets in partnership with the design team.
- Contribute to team growth by structuring departmental processes and participating in meetings.
- Utilize historical data and industry knowledge to support business development.
- Communicate with project stakeholders, including owners, engineers, and vendors, to ensure clarity on project scope and requirements.
- Conduct takeoffs and pricing estimates accurately without requiring direct supervision.
- Identify and interpret any gaps in project scope, especially in incomplete drawings.
- Solicit and incorporate bids from subcontractors to ensure accurate project cost estimations.
- Assemble comprehensive proposals and bid packages tailored to the requirements of the procuring entity.
- Present major project scopes, associated risks, and potential value engineering items during bid review meetings with the sales team and management.
- Maintain organized and functional Excel spreadsheets and Word documents for estimating purposes.
- Provide training and mentorship for junior estimators, offering guidance and oversight as needed.
- Work with operations to ensure estimating practices align with field technology and updated production rates.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in mechanical estimating, with a proven track record in complex projects.
- Preferred experience with EST Mep, Quote Soft, or Quote Express software.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
- Solid understanding of mechanical codes, piping and ducting systems, and related materials and installation methods.
- Ability to interpret computerized cost data and deliver detailed work on time.
- Capable of working independently and in a team environment, adapting to company-specific processes.
Must-Have Qualifications: Commercial HVAC Experience – Minimum of 5+ years of hands-on experience in commercial HVAC (no residential), with a strong technical background. Project Management – Proven experience managing multiple projects simultaneously, with project values ranging from $100K to $1M+. Professional Communication – Strong ability to communicate with clients and write clear, professional emails and reports. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) is required. Experience with job costing, scheduling, BIM coordination, estimating, and field supervision is preferred.
