The Mechanical Estimator (ME) plays a key role in the Pre-Construction department and frequently alternates between tasks as required by the estimating load. The ME is expected to perform take-offs; review the take-offs done by others; prepare estimates, budgets, value engineering and proposals. On assigned projects, the ME will handle all scope and pricing requirements between the post-bid and pre-award stage.
Essential Duties:
- Review plans and specifications to ensure that our estimates are in compliance with the contract documents.
- Attend pre-bid meetings and review all bid documents so that we properly account for all project requirements.
- Material take-off and prepare estimates for plumbing and mechanical (wet & dry side).
- Review sub and vendor quotes for scope and pricing.
- Produce budget and conceptual estimates with limited information.
- Take an active role in post-bid scope meetings with clients.
- Participate in turnover meetings for awarded projects and capable of packaging the entire estimate file for operations.
- Consult with other departments to discuss/formulate estimates.
- Exhibit ability to successfully mentor personnel within the department.
- Display a high degree of understanding with regard to project scope, cost, labor, time and profit.
- Other duties and special projects as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Take the lead role for the estimating team on assigned projects.
- Review estimates and take-offs of other estimators.
- Mentoring of less experienced team members.
Education/Experience/Licenses
- Bachelor of Science, or High School Diploma with 8 years estimating experience, or High School Diploma with 10 years trade related experience.
- A valid Florida Driver's License is required.
Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge and skill of:
- Two or more mechanical/plumbing trades (HVAC duct, HVAC piping and plumbing)
- Strong familiarity with specialized systems to include, but not limited to: Med gas, steam, compressed air, combination waste/vent, hydronics, different duct classifications, etc.
- Thorough development of estimated project scope and cost
- Advanced Excel, Word, Outlook, Take-off software and basic computer operations
- Ability to recognize risk and qualify our proposals
- Focused and detail oriented to identify and eliminate errors or omissions
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
Ability to:
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Meet time schedules, deadlines, and plan and organize work.
- Work confidently with discretion and independently with little direction.
- Maintain a high level of confidentiality.
- Have great attention to detail.
- Be well organized and reliable.
