A Medical Assistant, UCM Care Network, is an employee who performs a wide variety of patient care services under the direct supervision of a registered nurse, mid-level provider or physician in an office setting.
Essential Job Functions
- Fulfills patient care responsibilities as assigned that may include checking schedules and organizing patient flow; accompanying patients to exam/procedure room; assisting patients as needed with walking transfers, dressing, collecting specimens (drawing blood, if required by practice), preparing for exam, etc.; collecting patient history; performing screenings per provider guidelines; assisting physicians/nurses with various procedures; charting; relaying instructions to patients/families; answering calls, and providing pertinent information
- Fulfills clerical responsibilities as assigned that may include sending/receiving patient medical records; obtaining lab/X-ray reports, hospital notes, referral information, etc.; completing forms/requisitions as needed; (receptionist coverage, when required by practice); scheduling appointments; (billing and coding for insurance purposes, if required by practice); verifying insurance coverage and patient demographics; (collecting co-pays and documenting receipt, if required by practice); managing and updating charts to ensure that information is complete and filed appropriately
- Fulfills environmental responsibilities as assigned that may include setting up instruments and equipment according to practice protocols; cleaning exam/procedure rooms, instruments, and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control; cleaning sterilizer according to scheduled maintenance program and keeping appropriate records; ordering, sorting, storing supplies; and restocking exam/procedure rooms
- Fulfills organizational responsibilities as assigned including respecting/promoting patient rights; responding appropriately to emergency codes; sharing problems relating to patients and/or staff with immediate supervisor
- Fulfills clinical medical assisting responsibilities that vary according to state law, which may include medical/surgical asepsis, sterilization, instrument wrapping and autoclaving; checking vital signs or mensuration; physical examination preparations; clinical pharmacology; drug administration through various routes including injections (immunizations for various age groups); prescription verifications with physician’s orders; minor surgery assists including surgical tray set-up pre/post-surgical care, applying dressings, and suture removal; biohazard waste disposal and monitoring; therapeutic modalities; instructing patients with assistive devices, body mechanics, and home care; laboratory procedures including Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines; quality control methods; CLIA-waived testing; capillary punctures and venipunctures; specimen handling such as urine, throat, vaginal, stool, and sputum; electrocardiography including mounting, emergency triage, and first aid. Medical assistants must adhere to the MA scope of practice in the laboratory
- Performs other duties assigned
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Graduate of a certified program for Medical Assistants
- Active BLS certification from the American Heart Association (AHA)
- Phlebotomy training; Phlebotomist license and work experience, if required by practice
- Minimum of one year of recent experience working in a medical office/facility
- Experience with practice specialty
- Able to partner with teams in small to large practice groups
- Certified Medical Assistant
Preferred Qualifications
- Considerable skill in communicating verbally, determining priorities, and in organizing work; ability to maintain an organized, alphabetized filing system
- General working knowledge of PC: Excel, Microsoft Word for Windows, and EPIC
- Computerized appointment scheduling experience
- Ability to handle stress in a fast-paced environment
- Considerable skill in handling sensitive public contacts with discretion, tact and courtesy when dealing with patients, coworkers and physicians
- Physical ability to perform stocking, lifting and transporting supplies and instruments

In this role, we anticipate that you will generally work approximately 40 hours per week. We anticipate that you will generally be scheduled to work the day shift, between the hours of 7:30am-8:00pm and will not be scheduled for on-call shifts. We anticipate you will be scheduled to work 90% at the River East Clinic and 10% at various offsite locations. The days of the week that you are scheduled will vary depending on the week, but we anticipate that you will be scheduled to work on weekends (Saturday) once a month.
