Overview
The role of a Medical Records Technician is crucial in healthcare facilities as they are responsible for maintaining accurate and complete medical records for patients. Key Responsibilities
Collect, organize, and maintain patients' health information data.
Ensure all medical records are accurately documented and stored securely.
Adhere to strict guidelines of confidentiality and data protection, including HIPAA regulations.
Review patient records for completeness and accuracy.
Assign diagnostic codes to patient records for billing and data analysis.
Retrieve patient records for healthcare providers when needed.
Release information to persons or agencies according to regulations.
Track patient outcomes for quality assessment and improvement activities.
Scan and index documents into electronic medical record systems.
Assist with audits and compliance reviews.
Perform data entry tasks with a high level of accuracy.
Manage release of information requests from patients and healthcare providers.
Collaborate with other healthcare professionals to ensure accurate recordkeeping.
Stay updated on industry regulations and compliance standards.
Train staff on proper medical records management practices.
Required Qualifications
Associate's degree in Health Information Management or related field.
Certification as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) preferred.
Strong knowledge of medical terminology and diagnostic coding systems (e.g., ICD-10-CM, CPT).
Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) systems and other healthcare software.
Understanding of HIPAA regulations and patient confidentiality.
Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in data management.
Ability to organize and prioritize tasks effectively.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Proficiency in data entry and information retrieval.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Strong ethical standards and commitment to patient privacy.
Experience working in a healthcare setting is a plus.
Knowledge of regulatory requirements for medical record documentation.
Ability to adapt to changing technologies and processes in healthcare.
Basic understanding of healthcare billing and insurance processes.
