HJF is seeking a Medical Technician I/Assistant to collect and manage data, independently collect specimens and coordinate shipping of diagnostic specimens and various documents, and exercise independent judgment in the resolution of problems. This is the first of three levels within the Medical Technician series.
The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.
This position will be in support of the Family Medicine department within the University Health Center, which serves over 2500 active duty, dependents, and retired personnel assigned to the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS).
Note: This site requires that the incumbent has lived in the US for three out of the past five years.
Responsibilities:Responsibilities
- Provides technical support to 28 staff/guest providers; sets up instruments and equipment in preparation for minor surgical procedures and exams. Assists providers with dispensing of pharmacy medications.
- Performs patient screenings, immunizations, suture removals, and chaperone support.
- Assists with coordination of mass immunizations for USUHS.
- Schedules urgent and non-urgent patient appointments.
- Serves as research center representative at assigned military treatment facility or recruit training center. Interacts with military staff, doctors, and other professionals and builds professional and trusting relationships as related to study protocols.
- Assists in the development and implementation of recruitment strategies to increase participation into the study and/or clinical trial.
- Using DoD electronic medical records system, monitors medical records and schedules to determine subject eligibility for enrollment in various studies. This may also include being present in the sick call area in recruit training centers.
- Obtains informed consent from subjects and must be able to answer any questions or concerns regarding study purposes and procedures.
- Accurately hears, interprets and records subject responses to a short demographic questionnaire for each subject enrolled.
- Independently obtains swabs or other appropriate specimens from subjects. May collect blood samples from participants, including babies, children, young adults and elderly patients.
- Transfers all specimens to universal transport media, labeled, and stored according to proper standard operating procedures. Fills out requisitions and specimen logs.
- Reads, understands, and follows all standard operating procedures and study protocols.
- May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.
Education and Experience
- Associate's degree required, Bachelor's degree preferred
- Minimum of 0-2 years experience required
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Prior clinic experience preferred.
- Must possess strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
- Must be able to work and effectively communicate in a diverse workforce environment that includes Tri-Service enlisted, officer, civilian, and contract personnel.
- Skill in use of word processing, spreadsheet, graphic, email, and database software.
- Ability to follow a standard operating procedure.
- Ability to independently plan and prioritize work.
- Ability to accurately explain informed consents to groups.
- Ability to be a self-starter and work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to interface with investigators, research staff, and study participants.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a T3 Secret Clearance
Physical Capabilities
- Requires lifting materials over 25 lbs.
- Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods
Work Environment
- This position will take place primarily in a clinic or hospital setting.
Some positions or sites may require that the incumbent be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Proof of vaccination may be required.
