- JOB SUMMARY
- Performs medical laboratory tests, procedures, experiments, and analyses to provide date for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease by performing required duties and responsibilities.
- DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Overall performance rating of below indicated essential job duties:
- Conducts chemical analyses of body fluids such as blood, urine, spinal fluid, and other specimen to determine presence of normal and abnormal components
- Analyzes and verifies test results prior to release of findings for filing into the information system
- Performs quality control studies according to established protocols and routine preventative maintenance and equipment checks according to established schedule
- Responds to queries by other members of the hospital care team, such as physicians, in a courteous and timely manner
- Assists in the orientation and training of new laboratory employees
- Maintains professional growth and certification as it applies to the responsibilities of the position
- Performs STAT testing within the established turn-around guidelines
- Reports malfunction of equipment and/or computer to supervisor immediately
- Reports test results that fall within laboratory panic values to appropriate health care provider and documents efforts to report panic values
- Brings unusual or remarkable findings to the attention of the supervisor and/or pathologist.
- EDUCATION/LICENSE/ CERTIFICATIONS/OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum requirement:

Degree in one of the following:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Laboratory Science
- Bachelor’s Degree in a Chemical or Biological Science
- ASCP board-eligible to obtain Medical Laboratory Science ASCP certification or equivalent within 6 months of hire

- This job operates in a professional medical laboratory environment
- Regularly works near moving mechanical parts
- Regularly exposed toblood and/or body fluids andinfection.
- Occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals
- Occasionally exposed to risk of radiation
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
- PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Occasionally required to maintain a stationary position (standing or sitting)
- Frequently required to walk and move about
- Frequently required to operate a computer and other equipment
- Frequently required to use fine motor skills to handle and operate instruments/devices
- Regularly required to communicate with physicians and other care team requiring talking and hearing
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
