About the Job
The Mental Health Counselor (Part-Time or Full-Time position) will work with individuals who have been diagnosed with epilepsy or other seizure disorders. The counselor will provide assessment and counseling services addressing epilepsy-related cognitive and emotional challenges. Under the clinical supervision of EAFLA's existing staff psychologist, the counselor will work towards improving the quality of life for clients and ensuring that their mental health needs are addressed.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct comprehensive assessments of clients with epilepsy to determine their mental health needs and identify any co-occurring conditions.
- Provide individual, group, or family counseling sessions to clients and their families, offering emotional support, psychoeducation, and coping strategies tailored to their epilepsy-related challenges.
- Collaborate with clients to develop personalized treatment plans that address their unique goals and concerns, considering the impact of epilepsy on their mental health.
- Implement evidence-based therapeutic interventions, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, mindfulness techniques, and stress management strategies, to help clients manage their emotions, anxiety, depression, and other mental health symptoms.
- Offer guidance and support to clients in developing healthy coping mechanisms and adaptive strategies to navigate the challenges associated with epilepsy and seizure disorders.
- Provide education and information on epilepsy-related topics promoting understanding, acceptance, and effective management of the condition.
- Participate in implementing MEW programs.
- Coordinate with interdisciplinary teams, including case managers, neurologists, and psychologists, to ensure holistic support and referral for psychological counseling and psychiatry referrals.
- Maintain accurate and confidential client records, documenting progress and treatment plans and interventions in compliance with professional and ethical standards.
- Work closely with EAFLA staff psychologist to ensure effective coordination and clinical supervision.
- Stay current with the latest research, trends, and best practices in epilepsy and mental health counseling, participating in professional development activities as these become available.
- Provide data and reports as required and/or requested.
- Participate in EAFLA’s fundraising activities, staff, and department meetings.
- Abide by all EAFLA’s and state policies, procedures, and mandates.
- Perform any other duties as assigned when needed.
- Always represent the agency in a positive manner.
Qualifications:
- Prior experience working with individuals who have epilepsy or other seizure disorders or disabilities is highly desirable, but not required.
- Must be licensed to practice as a Mental Health Counselor in the State of Florida.
- Bilingual English & Spanish, preferred.
Compensation: $50,000 to $62,500
