Job Summary:
Provides direct and indirect patient care in individual patient care settings, consistent with the nursing department's standards of care. Prepares and compiles medical records. Initiates directions from physician and nursing staff.
Department Specific Competencies:
In addition to competencies of a patient care tech, the mental health tech is also required to:
- Demonstrate the ability to take an inquiry call and perform pre-admission clinical assessments.
- Demonstrate the ability to administer a Mini-Mental Status Tool and other approved assessment tools.
- Demonstrates knowledge of professional ethics, patient rights and confidentiality.
- Demonstrates knowledge of administering the BPRS tool.
- Demonstrate the ability to assess sexual acting out behavior.
- Demonstrate the ability to administer the suicide assessment toll and interpret data.
- Must complete NET Learning on therapeutic relationships and boundaries.
- Demonstrate the ability to perform AIMS toil and interpret data.
- Understand the predominant diagnosis of patient population served and most common treatment methodologies and completing the psychiatric terminology in-service.
- Demonstrate knowledge of medications to be administered, including the medication's effects, side effects and potential adverse reactions.
- Capable of assisting in medical and psychiatric emergencies according to protocol until a physician arrives.
- Currently CPR certified
- Completed Handle with Care training.
- Performs 15 minute precaution checks as first priority.
- Monitors patients for safety and medical status and reports abnormalities to RB at once. Failure to perform 15 minute checks correctly may result in immediate termination.
- Monitors day rooms and patient rooms for safety each shift.
- Understands court commitment process.
- Performs the complete psychiatric patient registration process and obtains patient signatures according to registration standard work for behavioral health.
Education:
High school diploma or GED required.
Experience:
Experience in a mental health setting preferred but not required.
Language/Communication Skills:
English required. Multi-lingual capabilities enhance the ability to perform this job. Must have the ability to speak effectively and professionally to all staff, management, and all outside individuals at all levels from elementary to professional.
Reasoning Ability:
Must have the ability to apply non-judgmental reasoning capabilities whenever necessary when dealing with patients, visitors, and staff. Critical thinking skills a must. Must have reasonable reflective thinking focused on deciding what to believe or do. Must possess purposeful, self-regulatory judgment which results in interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and inference, as well as explanation of the evidential, conceptual, methodological, criteriological, or contextual considerations upon which that judgment is based.
