BLUESTONE: is seeking dynamic healthcare professionals interested in bringing psychiatric care to a new level for children ages 6-17. POSITION SUMMARY: The Mental Health Technician (MHT) provides direct and indirect patient care under the direction of a registered nurse. The MHT provides for the personal care and comfort of psychiatric patients. In addition, the MHT maintains a safe, clean, and therapeutic environment and participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- Assist clinicians in organizing clients for group counseling, individual counseling and case management in a learning role.
- Assist in the admissions process, answer patient questions, assist patient in adjusting to the program routine, takes vital signs and records on the Nursing Assessment Form and notifies RN of changes.
- Act as the liaison between the patient and the nursing and clinical treatment staff to report any changes in the patient's physical or mental condition.
- Responsible for supervising patients during intensive levels of care with an emphasis on patient safety and well-being.
- Perform general nursing care, i.e., transferring patients, assisting with ADLs.
- Monitor patient's compliance with pre and post procedure instructions, under the supervision of the RN.
- Demonstrate the ability to identify behaviors that require intervention.
- Provide ongoing feedback about the patient’s behavior to the nurse and/or other appropriate health care team members for the plan of care and its reevaluation.
- Able to perform safety checks at scheduled times, documents appropriately.
- Responsible for one-on-one observation for High-risk patients.
- Demonstrate the ability to set limits for patients and other de-escalation techniques.
- Utilize verbal and physical de-escalation as warranted in order to keep patients safe and remain current in warranted certification and training.
- Report immediately to the nurse any unsafe conditions and/or safety violations.
- Demonstrate the ability to perform crisis intervention which may include seclusion and/or restraint.
- Assist with therapeutic groups under the direction of the RN
- Communicate appropriately and clearly to the Nurse Executive, RNs, physicians and other team members.
- Documentation meets current standards and policies.
- Treat patients and families with respect and dignity, provides emotional support.
- Perform patient care, according to policy and procedure, and competency, in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
- Demonstrate all applicable competencies for the position and participates in periodic re-evaluation of such competencies.
- Support and maintains a culture of safety and quality.
- Answer the telephone and communicates in a professional manner at all times, directs calls appropriately, takes messages.
- Operate equipment safely and correctly.
- Maintain a good working relationship within the department and with the other departments of the facility.
- Orient new staff members.
- Demonstrate the ability to be organized and flexible, acts appropriately in stressful/emergency situations.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education: High School Diploma required with certification. Associate’s Degree or equivalent hours of college coursework in relevant field preferred.
- Licensure/Certification: CDCA, RBT or QBHS required for individuals that possess only a High School Diploma.
- Skills: Ability to deal with crisis situations which require prompt decision and action.
- Sensitivity in relating to persons of varying backgrounds and demonstrate ability to work with diverse groups of people possessing various strengths, aptitudes and abilities.
- Ability to perform job responsibilities with a high degree of initiative and independent judgment.
- Demonstrated oral and written communication skills and effective interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in using Hospital computer systems and software as required to perform essential job functions.
- Practical and creative problem solving skills.
- Additional languages in addition to English preferred.
- Experience: At least one (1) year experience with at-risk youth, development disabilities, autism, or psychiatric/mental health conditions preferred.
