We are recruiting a Chief Fire Protection Engineer for NV5's MEP Planning and Design Group to plan, to set standards for the department, mentor and train staff members, develop processes that improve quality and reduce time on projects, and conduct QA/QC reviews and professional stamping on selected projects. The Chief will also assist in identifying individuals to conduct QA/QC under their direct supervision. Responsibilities are as follows:
- The role will include the overall integration and standardization of Fire Protection standards and processes across all BT (Buildings & Technology) – Planning and Design offices. To date, all offices have maintained separate and various methods for design processes, documentation, CAD standards, QA/QC tracking, training, and mentoring.
- Mentoring/training technical staff members and arranging for outside training of staff as well as assisting them in technical career pathing to best utilize their education and work experience. Assist Group Leaders as requested to identify methods for ensuring optimal utilization of staff. Participate in the technical staff performance review process as needed to assist the Group Leaders in assessing staff technical skill development in their respective
discipline. - Responsible for overseeing the quality control review process of engineers’/designers’ drawings, specifications, and cost estimates to ensure compliance with technical requirements and code standards. The Chief will be responsible for utilizing their professional engineering stamp (Engineer of Record) on projects on a regular basis.
- Responsible for defining and setting engineering standards for the department in order to make the department run as effectively and efficiently as possible. Will interface with other Chief Engineers to ensure the smooth coordination of efforts.
- Actively works on complex projects assisting groups that may lack experienced staff to handle the project as time permits.
- Responsible for conceptualizing the design on complex projects and assisting in conceptualizing the design on a multitude of projects.
- Be available to assist junior staff with questions, problems, and advice.
- Must be a member and on a committee of at least one (1) trade specific organization (ASHRAE, ASPE, AIA, etc.).
Must be ready to deliver at least one (1) existing prepared AIA credit presentation white paper or article per year.
- As the Chief Fire Protection Engineer, you may be required to temporarily fill in for several roles within the department in circumstances such as when junior staff need additional support, we have a staffing shortage or staff turnover, and/or a project requires your level of expertise.
- Will attend meetings on construction sites, at client offices, at code official’s offices and/or other locations, as needed to meet the needs and expectations of our clients and the specific project needs.
- Other duties as required or assigned.
- Must have a bachelor’s degree in engineering and a minimum of twenty years experience designing and managing projects independently or equivalent education and experience.
- Experience in commercial, higher education, laboratories, manufacturing,and/or housing projects is preferred.
- Must have a thorough and strong understanding of the principles of the discipline he/she is heading.
- Must keep current through continuing education/seminars, etc.
- Must have Professional Engineering Registration. The Chief Fire Protection Engineer is expected to apply for many state licenses and maintain these licenses. It is expected that the Chief may be one of few who hold licenses in states where projects are less frequent, but they will be expected to be the Engineer of Record (stamping engineer) for projects in these states as they arise.
- Must have strong leadership, problem-solving, communication, interpersonal and client relationship skills.
- Must have previous people management experience.
- Must be able to work with engineers at all levels in order to advance their technical skill set. Must be accessible and approachable.
- Must be organized, attentive to detail and able to effectively multi-task.
- Must be able to proficently delegate workload.
- Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office and project management software applications is required.

- We expect this position to be a predominantly remote position, with at least one day per week in the office, and more days when necessary for staff mentoring, implementation of staff performance improvement plans, annual staff reviews, on boarding of new hires (new hire on boarding deems additional days per week), etc.
The pay range for this position is $180,000- $220,000 per year; however, base pay offered may be higher or lower depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience of the candidate. Restricted stock units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered.
