About the Team
Intertek's Electrical business line applies product testing expertise quickly and efficiently to help clients meet safety, performance, environmental and quality requirements for every market they wish to enter. Our Electrical team provides assurance, testing, inspection, and certification for a variety of electric products, including appliances, consumer electronics, lighting, medical devices, information communications technology, HVACR, industrial, and energy transmission and distribution.
What are we looking for?
The Microbiologist position is responsible for performing evaluation of a variety of commercial products to standard and non-standard microbiological test protocols, generating reports and communicating results to clients as needed. This Microbiologist position is also responsible for providing local expertise in one or more product categories, mentoring and training less senior technical personnel, and contributing to continued quality of lab practices and procedures.
What you'll do:
- Assume project ownership including testing to various microbiological standardized methods (such as ISO, ATCC and ASTM)
- Development of non-standard microbial methods in alignment with quality protocols
- Cultivation and enumeration of various BSL-1 and BSL-2 organisms
- Operate and contribute to maintenance of lab equipment and biosafety practices
- Assist in development of technical papers and marketing
- Assist in identification and implementation of scope expansions
- Conduct testing validation for client developed protocols for various products and report results within the appropriate confidence intervals
- Develop SOP and LOPs for standard methods as needed such that all personnel conduct the same test in the same manner. Must communicate with quality personnel throughout process.
- Mentor less senior technical personnel.
- Supply information for quotes such as lead time, turnaround time, pricing, testing location, equipment needs, and sample requirements.
- Provide additional sales support such as attending client visits and conducting preliminary reviews of products such that industry standards and client needs can be identified.
- Provide more specialized "expertise" in areas such as microbial resistance, air sampling analysis, and sanitation performance testing by obtaining and maintaining advanced product knowledge.
- Must be able to set up and operate air sampling systems, microscopes, and environmental chambers.
- Must be able to calibrate and/or identify damaged equipment.
- Follow sample handling procedures, ensuring that sample is logged in and out of the system. Move equipment as needed through the facility. Properly package sample for shipment.
- Provide proper shipping and warning documentation for hazardous work and international client samples.
- Communicate project status and test results to client, sales personnel, and management throughout testing. Provide on-going support to clients as needed.
- Within policy guidelines, identify, properly document, and recommend engineering judgments.
- Perform other work within the same facets as required.
What it takes to be successful in this role
- 4-year bachelor's degree in biology or microbiology
- Minimum 2 years' experience working in a laboratory with organisms such as bacteria, fungus and viruses.
- Must be able to show a foundation in research and report writing.
- Experience with viral transfection and propagation (BSL-1 and BSL-2) and/or culture of various cell/tissue types (including mammalian) preferred.
- Prior project management experience is preferred.
